FRC – CIS football players of the week [2]: It pays to put up crazy numbers

Regina quarterback Noah Picton, Concordia linebacker Samuel Brodrique and Saskatchewan kicker Sean Stenger are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 5, 2016.

Picton, a third-year business administration student from Regina, was honoured on offence thanks to his record-setting performance in a 41-39 overtime loss to provincial rival Saskatchewan, last Friday in Saskatoon. Despite the disappointing result in the regular season opener for both teams, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound pivot put up mindboggling numbers, completing 29 of 41 passes for 471 yards, four touchdowns and only one interception, while also accounting for 80 percent of his team’s ground attack with 108 yards on only seven carries. The passing and rushing yard totals were both career highs for Picton, who became only the third quarterback in program history to eclipse 100 rushing yards in a CIS game. His 471 yards through the air are the third-highest single-game total in team annals, while his 579 yards of total offence rank second on the all-time U of R list.

Montreal quarterback Samuel Caron and Carleton running back Jayde Rowe were also up for the award.

Bodrique, a first-year finance student from Ste. Marthe-sur-le-lac, Que., took home the award on defence following his spectacular university debut in a 30-16 road win over McGill, last Friday night. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound freshman was simply dominant in the Stingers’ RSEQ opener as he finished with two interceptions for 93 return yards, one fumble recovery, one pass breakup and five tackles. Bodrique snagged a pass from quarterback Nicolas English in the Concordia end zone in the first quarter, and then returned his second interception 81 yards to the McGill eight-yard line in the second stanza to set up a Stingers touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, he recovered a loose ball near midfield, a key play that led to the game-winning major on his team’s next series.

Linebackers Frank Renaud of Windsor and DJ Lalama of Manitoba were also nominated.

Stenger, a third-year engineering student from Saskatoon, was the choice on special teams after he recorded the game-tying and game-winning field goals in the Huskies’ 41-39 season-opening OT victory against Regina at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior, who was good on six of seven attempts overall on the night, hit a 20-yarder on the final play of regulation to tie the affair at 31 apiece and then sealed the win with a 10-yard boot on Saskatchewan’s second series in extra time. Stenger also hit all three of his extra-point attempts and added a pair of singles to tally 23 of the Huskies’ 41 points, and averaged over 40 yards per punt (40.8) and over 50 yards per kickoff (53.0). 

Kickers Félix Ménard-Brière of Montreal and Adam Preocanin of McMaster were the other nominees.
