Golden support

Calgary defensive back becomes next recruit for CWUAA’s 2014 class.

A solid support system was a key factor in a Team Alberta standout’s decision to sign with a local CIS team.

Ayden Gelfand is the newest recruit to join Alberta Golden Bears for the 2014 season.

“I will have a good support system in Edmonton making the transition from high school to university life a lot easier than if I were to move to a city and school where I did not know anybody,” explained Gelfand of his decision.

Furthermore, the environment, proximity and the football program were other reasons the 5’9, 163 pound defensive back from Calgary, Alberta committed to the CWUAA school.

“The first was the atmosphere I got during my visit,” said Gelfand.  “The coaching staff was fantastic and the facility was great.”

“I wanted to move away from home but not too far away so Edmonton seemed like a perfect choice.”

Gelfand is looking forward to having an active role in the Golden rebirth.

“With Coach (Chris) Morris being a new coach, it is almost like the Bears are rebuilding and I wanted to be a part of that,” added the Calgary defensive back.  “I want to help them get better in the next five years and contribute as best as I can.”

Currently, Gelfand is playing for his high school team, Henry Wise Wood Warriors of Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA). This past July, he represented his home province as a member of Team Alberta at the 2013 Football Canada Cup tournament in Moncton, New Brunswick.
