Tier I (School Pop. 1250+)

Regional Semi-finals, November 11

NORTH

#6 Salisbury Sabres at #2 Harry Ainlay Titans
12:00 p.m., Foote Field (Edmonton)

The Titans are flying through their year going untouched from wire to wire sporting a 10-0 record with an average margin of victory well over two TD’s a game. Featuring an explosive offense, most of who are Provincial All-Stars that can return next year, Harry Ainlay’s first order of business in Provincials is to avenge last year’s stunning upset loss to the Notre Dame Cougars from Red Deer in the first round of last year’s event. Standing in their way is the third seed out of the Metro Edmonton, the Salisbury Sabres. They too are chock full of young talent, and many consider them to be a year ahead of schedule in their re-build. Still, they can give you a game and in the Winter Wonderland world of the 2017 ASAA Provincials, it’s anyone’s game once the snow flies and the ball is kicked off.

#8 Centennial Coyotes at #5 Bellerose Bulldogs
2:30 p.m., Foote Field (Edmonton)

Well, here is a match-up no one saw coming. Two weeks ago, the both of these teams were in serious danger of not even making their league’s playoffs let alone advancing to Provincials. A 12-6 squeaker over Crescent Heights on Sept. 28 is the only difference between the Coyotes getting the last spot in Calgary Div. I playoffs and relegation to the Div. II playdowns. From there, they have come alive with a 20-14 upset over the previously #5 ranked Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats to stake a spot in the Calgary Semi-Finals from where they qualified as the fourth seed out of Calgary into Tier I Provincials (since Lindsay Thurber from Red Deer declined their Region 4 spot). Bellerose was stuck in a four-team weave for the final three spots in the Edmonton Division I playoffs but a gutty win over last year’s Northern Tier I Champion Bev Facey Falcons in the final regular season game secured their spot and entry into Provincials. Both teams are missing key players with Bellerose’s being most severe as technically they are down to their 5th string QB due to unbelievable run of bad luck at that position.

SOUTH

#7 Henry Wise Wood Warriors at #1 St. Francis Browns
7:00 p.m., Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

OK, be honest. At the end of the regular season who predicted this would be your Calgary Division I Final? The tradition laden Browns had many people writing their name in pen for this game but the Warriors? Mired in 5th place after a muddled season that saw them with a losing record for the first time in recent memory, they have shocked Cowtown with two upsets of the higher ranked Ernest Manning Griffins 39-23 in the quarterfinals and the Notre Dame Pride 25-0 in the semi-finals on Monday night. Beating the Browns is another tall order but it seems the Warriors are on a roll for the ages. This game also doubles as the Tier I South Semi-Final.

#3 Notre Dame Pride at #4 L.C.I. Rams
2:00 p.m., University of Lethbridge Community Stadium (Lethbridge)

Two of the most storied programs in the history of Tier I Provincials will meet for only the second time in their histories. The Rams have been a factor at Tier I ever since the first event in 1985 while the Pride have been a more recent phenomenon only joining the ranks at Tier I in 2009. Both programs have multiple Provincial titles but have only faced each other once before in 2012 where the Pride defeated the Rams 47-15 in the South Final. With the upsets specials continuing in the Calgary Division I playoffs this wasn’t necessarily an anticipated match-up which makes it all the more fun.

Tier II (School Pop. 750-1249)

Regional Semi-finals, November 11

NORTH

#5 Austin O’Brien Crusaders at #4 Lloydminster Barons
3:00 p.m., Armstrong Field (Lloydminster)

Beware the Crusaders. Don’t let their barely over .500 5-4 record fool you. They put up with all that Edmonton Division I could throw at them and made the playoffs leaving four Tier I sized teams in their wake. In their league semis they gave the powerful Harry Ainlay Titans all they could handle before bowing 38-22. On the other side of the ball are the Barons who were running the board in the Wheatland before dropping the League Final two weeks ago to Holy Rosary 11-9. The good news for them is that they have been very tough in the first round of Provincials the last two years beating these same Crusaders at home in 2015 and Paul Kane in 2016. A later game is due to Remembrance Day activities on Armstrong Field.

#6 Paul Kane Blues at #1 St. Joseph’s Celtics
4:00 p.m., CKC Field (Grande Prairie)

There are technically 13 Tier II sized teams in the four leagues that put teams into Provincials at that level in Northern Alberta. And yet it’s the four teams represented here that seem to have standing reservations as this will be the 5th year in a row that we will start the Big Dance with only these teams vying for the North in Tier II. It seems even more like same old, same old as, but for a switch in dance partners last year, this will be the fourth time in five years that Paul Kane and St. Joes will kick things off. That’s not necessarily good news for the Blues as despite winning their first Provincial game vs. the Celtics in 2013, they have dropped that last three these two teams have played in Provincials and now have the long bus ride to Grande Prairie for a date with the #1 ranked Tier II team to try to turn things around.

SOUTH

#2 Hunting Hills Lightning at St. Mary’s Saints
4:15 p.m., Stampeder Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

On paper this seems like the biggest mismatch of Provincials. The undefeated and Central Alberta League Champion Lightning against the unranked Saints who have won a total of one game so far this year. Thankfully for the Saints it was the one that counted as they beat the only other Tier II sized school in Calgary, the Robert Thirsk Comets, in the last regular season game 27-1 to earn the berth from Region 3 into Provincials. The Lightning have kept it close to the vest this year, only playing league regular season and playoff games and not filling their byes with games, so we’ll see how the well-rested approach goes when kick-off happens in Calgary this Saturday.

#7 Medicine Hat Mohawks at #3 Foothills Falcons
1:00 p.m., Foothills H.S. (Okotoks)

They’re baaaaaaack…. Even though they only got to .500 or better in mid-October, the two-time defending Tier II Provincial Champion is a team to watch once again in November. Sitting at 3-3 at the end of the regular season the Falcons have soared through the playoffs outscoring their three opponents by a combined score of 115-13. Their opponent, the Medicine Hat Mohawks, are no slouches themselves having dropped a couple of games but won seven and their umpteenth Rangeland League Championship along the way. They are facing a short week with their qualifying game scheduled for last Friday moved to Tuesday due to the heavy snowfall in Southern Alberta. Are the Falcons poised to make another run? We’ll find out Saturday.

Tier III (School Pop. 450-749)

Regional Semi-finals, November 11

NORTH

#4 St. Albert Skyhawks at #7 Peace Wapiti Titans
1:30 p.m., CKC Field (Grande Prairie)

A rematch from last year that saw the Skyhawks win 22-17 in Edmonton. This year the Hawks are on the road vs. a Titan team that has won seven games this year and advanced to their first ever Peace Bowl this past weekend. This will mark the seventh straight year that St. Albert has qualified for the Tier III Provincials and they have one Provincial Final appearance to show for it. The Titans are still relatively new to the process this being only their second Tier III qualification.

#5 Wetaskiwin Sabres at #3 Holy Rosary Raiders
12:00 p.m., Holy Rosary Field (Lloydminster)

Here’s a team we haven’t seen in the Big Dance for the while – the Wetaskiwin Sabres. Laying in the weeds for most of the year and finishing fourth in the Rural Division of the Central League, the Sabres have strung together two upsets in a row over Frank Maddock and Sylvan Lake to not only win that Division but get back into Provincials for the first time since their Provincial Tier III Championship year of 2006. A bit of a rude re-introduction though as their welcoming committee is the two-time defending Northern Tier III Champion Holy Rosary Raiders – and in Lloydminster no less.

SOUTH

#1 Cochrane Cobras at #8 Brooks Buffalos
2:30 p.m., Brooks Jr. H.S. (Brooks)

27 years and counting the Cochrane Cobras have advanced to Provincial play. That’s a decade longer than most of their current player have been alive. Another daunting number is their 15-2 (.882) record in first round games since they moved to Tier III in 2000. The Cobras are a legend in Alberta winning their tenth Tier III Provincial Title in the last fifteen seasons last year. What a place for the Brooks Buffalos to get back in the game. Absent from the Big Dance since 2010, the Buffalos are quite accomplished in the past winning the Tier III Title in 2009 and two Tier II’s in the 1990’s, but recent teams haven’t made the cut until this year. Their reward…. Cochrane.

#6 Sylvan Lake Lakers at #2 Cardston Cougars (GAME TO BE PLAYED FRIDAY, NOV. 10)
6:00 p.m.., University of Lethbridge Community Stadium (Lethbridge)

A long travel day for the Lakers awaits them as with Region 4 getting a second slot this year, the Lakers live to fight another day after their tight loss to Wetaskiwin in the Central League Rural Championship Game last week. Still, they are Central Alberta’s most consistent participant in Provincials over the past decade so this is nothing new for them. What is new is their opponent. The Cardston Cougars not only lay claim to the #2 ranking but are also the Southern Alberta League’s Champions for 2017. This could be their year but first they must deal with the Lakers. This game will be played Friday night as Cardston has elected to move this game into Lethbridge and play on the turf at the U of L.

Tier IV (School Pop. 449 or less)

Regional Semi-finals, November 11

NORTH

#4 Sexsmith Sabres at #8 Cold Lake Royals
1:00 p.m., Soholt Field (Cold Lake)

Possibly the farthest anyone has to travel this weekend. Clear across the Province from the far west to eastern border go the Sabres who once again are in the hunt at Tier IV. Despite having qualified for Provincials at the Tier IV level for 14 consecutive seasons, Sexsmith has not hit pay dirt since the creation of the Tier IV level of play in 1999 but are hoping this might be the year having recorded a solid season in the Mighty Peace league. On the flip side of this match-up is another perennial attendee in the Cold Lake Royals who have represented themselves well but haven’t to date been to the promised land. Don’t let the 2-5 record fool you. These guys can play. Should be fun in Cold Lake this Saturday.

#9 Hillside Cougars at #4 Stettler Wildcats
1:00 p.m., Larry Wilson Field (Stettler)

This year represents Hillside’s second ever appearance in Provincials but considering the last time was 1999 they have a lot of catching up to do. Quietly building a consistent contender in the Mighty Peace, the team from Valleyview can hang with anyone. Facing them are last year’s Northern Tier IV Champs, the Stettler Wildcats. An up and down year for the Wildcats came to a head when it mattered most and they qualified once again out of the tough Central Alberta League Rural Division. Its anyone’s game in the North draw for Tier IV.

SOUTH

#5 Canmore Wolverines at #1 Willow Creek Cobras
2:00 p.m., Cobra Field (Claresholm)

The dark horse in this hunt are the Canmore Wolverines, who play in at the feet of the Rocky Mountains in one of the world’s most beautiful settings for a football game. Quietly putting together a solid 7-2 record in the revamped Big Sky Conference, the took out the perennial Tier IV power Drumheller Titans last weekend to earn this berth. Standing in their way is another perennial power in Willow Creek, who has qualified for Provincials out of the Southern Alberta League every year but one (2008) since 2000 and made it to the Championship Game five times yet only have one Title to show for it. Two teams with something to prove meet this Saturday in Willow Creek

#2 W.R. Myers at #3 Rundle College Cobras
1:00 p.m., Rundle College Field (Calgary)

You could hear a collective gasp when the word came out that due to a smaller population the Rundle College Cobras were returning to Tier IV. Once a juggernaut at Tier IV the Cobras collected two straight Titles in 2009 and 2010 then promptly moved up to Tier III where despite qualifying for Provincials at that level five of the past six seasons, weren’t able to replicate the success they had before. Now they are back and looking to renew acquaintances. First up is the star-crossed W.R. Myers Rebels, who have ran the board with the exception of one team – the #1 ranked Willow Creek Cobras – who have beaten them soundly twice. Will they get another shot? They’ll have to get past another bunch of Cobras first.
