press release
re:
2013 Womenβs World Football Championship will not be held in New Brunswick
After one year of receiving the approval of the Football Canada Board of Directors to bid the tournament
with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and reporting to the board four times on the
status of the tournament, the Host Committee and sponsors are baffled by Football Canadaβs decision to
withdraw as both Football Canada and IFAF did press releases announcing Saint John, NB as the host city.
In June the Host Committee received an email from IFAF that it had 72 hours to have Football Canada sign
the contract. The next day the Host Committee received an email from Football Canada saying it would not
sign the contract and it would have no further contact with the committee. The committee called on its
partner and Football Canada member, Football New Brunswick (FNB)to launch an appeal.
Football New Brunswick sent an immediate appeal to Football Canada while the tournament committee
sent off the revised copy of the contract to IFAF for approval. IFAF never responded and Football Canada
responded four hours before the deadline to FNB. Their answer was the tournament was a huge liability.
The Host Committee had 68% of their budget accounted for and had just received a Province of New
Brunswick economic impact study showing that the tournament could be projected to produce $6 million in
tourism and spending.
At the time of this press release the Host Committee has still not been officially contacted about the
cancellation of the world tournament.
The Host Committee would like to thank all the government departments, sponsors, volunteers, fans and
Football New Brunswick for all their time and commitment to this project. This is a great loss to our
communities, football programs and the people of New Brunswick.
