Host province selects roster

Team New Brunswick announces Top 50 provincial team roster for 2013 Football Canada Cup

On June 1 and 2, 2013, Football New Brunswick took the field for their selection camp at Mount Allison University. The players invited participated in five practices including two on both Saturday and Sunday as well as meetings during the day and night.

“Our goal of the weekend was to improve,” said Head Coach Gaeten Richard. “We challenged the guys quite a bit and they responded very well.”

“There is no question that we improved with every practice and meeting.”

“I was very happy with the approach our guys had in practice and meetings,” said Richard reflecting on the weekend.

“It was definitely a different experience for them but they responded well and because of that we improved.”

The camp signified the end of a long process that included development camps in Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton that started in February and March.

Following the development camps, players from around the three areas were encouraged to participate in the pillar phase. The teams practiced three times a week including scrimmages against one another.

Once the pillar was completed, 50 players were selected to participate in the selection camp.

“The process has been long but it has been great,” said Richard. “It allowed us to really focus on fundamentals, which is really what is most important.”

Looking ahead, Team New Brunswick began practicing Wednesday in Saint John and Thursday in Oromocto in preparation for their exhibition game this Saturday against Nova Scotia.

The team has two exhibitions games scheduled with Nova Scotia, the first being Saturday and the second is set for June 22.

The next few weeks the players will be evaluated even closer and the exhibition games will add a different level of competition for the team.

“We have been preaching to our guys to compete with everything they do, now we get to compete against another team in a game like environment,” said Richard. “I think that it will be a great learning experience for us and it will really allow us to evaluate where we are at as a team.”

Practices will happen twice during weeks they have a game and three times on other weeks.

The first of two exhibition games goes Saturday at the East Hants Sports Dome, kick off is at 1:30pm. The second goes June 22 at Canada Games stadium in Saint John.

Team New Brunswick kicks off the Canada Cup tournament on Monday, July 15 against Alberta.
