National Flag hosts unveiled

Saskatchewan to host 2013 Under 16 and Under 18 flag nationals

Football Canada in conjunction with Football Saskatchewan is proud to unveil Regina as host of the 2013 Flag Football National Championships taking place July 25-29 at the University of Regina. The event moves to Western Canada for the first time in six years after successfully being hosted in Southwestern Ontario during August of 2012.

“Football Saskatchewan is excited to host the 2013 flag nationals this summer, as we’ve had tremendous growth in the flag discipline over the last few years,” explained Football Saskatchewan Technical Director, Mike Thomas. “In hosting flag nationals we now get to see how that growth will translate on the national stage.”

“We’ve previously hosted the Football Canada Cup in 2009, the 6 Nations Challenge in 2010 in addition to selection camps for the Junior National Team (in 2012) and Women’s National Team (in 2013). Having the flag nationals this summer in Regina is another event that we’re extremely proud and excited to host.”

Beginning in 2011, in accordance with the growth of flag football and the development of Football Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, the Flag Football National Championships modified its under-15 co-ed division to separate boys and girls under-16 divisions. The under- 16 (U16) divisions supplemented the pre-existing U18 divisions which were added in 2010.

The 2013 edition of the flag nationals is composed of three divisions – male and female under-16 (U16) divisions in addition to a female under-18 (U18) division – will host teams from British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and host Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan will look to defend their U16 female title on home turf after edging Nova Scotia 25-24. Also in 2012, Quebec captured U16 gold in the male division with a 39-34 win against Manitoba while Quebec’s U18 females blanked Saskatchewan 44-0.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
