Odds on a Canadian Earning a Super Bowl Ring in the 2015-16 NFL Football Season

With a strong Canadian contingent playing the American game on quite a few contenders, the odds of finding Super Bowl rings crossing back over the border in 2016 are quite high. Yes, there’s Jon Ryan on the Seattle Seahawks and yes, there’s still Shaun Suisham kicking in Pittsburgh. It’s the new blood that will turn heads this season though. Quite a few Canucks will be featured by NFL contenders in some prominent roles.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (+500)

Β

Alright let’s get the Hawks out of the way first. As mentioned, Saskatchewan’s own Jon Ryan is still the team’s starting Punter heading into the new campaign. He is also joined by Luke Willson at Tight End out of LaSalle, Ontario. Willson will have his work cut out for him though, with the acquiring of TE Jimmy Graham from New Orleans over the offseason.

Nonetheless, the team that has been to the show for the past two years straight is still favoured to make a third appearance. Their odds to win Super Bowl 50 lead the pack at +500 according to U.S. based NFL betting site TopBet.eu.

For what it’s worth, the team does also feature another familiar face to most Canadians – Chris Matthews. The former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Most Outstanding Rookie award winner was a key figure in the team’s return to the Super Bowl last season.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (+800)

Β

Here’s where the new blood really kicks in, the white and blue have locked up some big Canadian names – most of which know all of the words to Oh Canada. First up, Henoc Muamba will be entering his second season with the Colts. The Mississauga, Ontario native who shined at linebacker with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men registered six tackles in 13 games last season.

He’s joined by Tyler Varga out of Kitchener, Ontario. The three-time all-Ivy honoree running back out of Yale will join Muamba at camp with hopes of making the final cut. Colts management didn’t do him any favors though, signing San Francisco 49er great Frank Gore to also compete for the running back role.

Offensive lineman Ben Heenan was also signed by Indianapolis but was waived by the team at the start of August. The former first overall selection of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is still on the team’s radar though. Chuck Pagano told an Indiana radio station the team would have interest bringing Heenan back to the club once healthy.

Finally, an honourable mention goes to wide receiver Duron Carter. Carter starred at wide out for the Montreal Alouettes over the past two seasons. He was signed by the Colts in February.

DALLAS COWBOYS (+1,500)

Still white and blue but a different variety, the Dallas Cowboys would be your next best bet (based on the TopBet Sportsbook odds) to bring back a few rings. The Cowboys currently feature two Canadians in long snapper L. P. Ladouceur out of Montreal and Windsor, Ontario’s own defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford.

Ladouceur is now 34 and entering the twilight of his career, while Crawford was selected in the third round of the 2012 draft by the Cowboys. Crawford has notched 53 tackles and six sacks in his career, he’s also been regarded as one the team’s top practice players.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
