OFC: Dominant Hurricanes secure top spot

With the season already halfway over, the 4-0 Hamilton Hurricanes have managed to sweep through each and every one of their opponents so far this season, including this past weekend, as the #2 nationally ranked visiting Hurricanes defeated the 3-0 Windsor AKO Fratmen (now 3-1) by a score of 36-3 to finally secure first place in the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) and quite possibly in the entire Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL).

Hurricanes QB #6 Kyle Sewell led his team by scoring one rushing touchdown and throwing 16 for 33 and 208 yards, which included zero interceptions and two touchdown passes; one to WR #80 Andrin Masotti who had seven catches for 64 yards, and one to WR #84 Matt Coates who had two catches for 39 yards. RB #23 Shawn Ward also contributed to the 224 total combined net offensive yards with two catches of his own for 22 yards, and WR #85 Trey Gervais had the longest single gain of the day with one catch for 35 yards. Gervais also had the longest punt return on the day of 48 yards.

On kicking, #10 Bobby Frame continued to showcase his dominance, as he grossed 386 yards off of nine punts (long 51), and 466 yards off of eight kick-offs (long 70). Frame also went 5-for-5 on single point conversions with an additional single point added for a combined total of six points on the day.

The defense had a spectacular and well-rounded day as well, as three players all led the way with 18 points each. DB #3 Jacob Barry had seven tackles and one interception resulting in a touchdown. DL #94 Ben Osmow had four tackles, one assist, one quarterback sack, one forced fumble, and two more tackles on special teams. DB #2 Connor Hitchcock had five tackles, four assists, and one interception.

LB #52 Farouk Musa had 13 points on defense, which included three tackles, three assists, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. DL #96 Tyler Corbett also had 10 points on defense, which included three tackles, one assist, and one quarterback sack.

Windsor’s stats included 162 yards of total offense, as RB #26 Brad Marsden had three carries for 39 yards, WR #81 Shayne Rice had four catches for 47 yards, QB #11 Austin Lumley went 4 for 12 and 34 yards with two interceptions, and QB #14 Mike Mallender went 10 for 20 and 87 yards with two interceptions. Leading the Fratmen defense was LB #9 John Moynahan who had 9.5 points, which consisted of four tackles and a shared quarterback sack.

This weekend, the Hamilton Hurricanes will be travelling to square-off against the 1-3 Ottawa Sooners on Saturday September 14 at 7 p.m. at the Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa, and the Windsor AKO Fratmen will be visiting the 0-4 GTA Bears at Ching Park on Saturday at 2 p.m.
