Ethan Johnson started his football career in 2015 with the Sault Ste. Marie Minor Football Association.
āMy four years of playing rep baseball as a pitcher taught me sound mechanics for throwing,ā said Ethan. āIt was a natural transition to quarterback.ā
His first year of high school football was success as the starting quarterback.
He and the Superior Heights Steelhawks went 8-1, winning both the city and Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) Championships.
āThis season has been very eventful,ā commented the Steelhawk. āEvery week our team has got better.ā
āMy coaches have prepared me to grow and develop as a quarterback,ā added Ethan.
Heading into this seasonās playoffs, the Steelhawks are looking to contend for the championship once again. Ethanās goal for the Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) is to play for team central.
āI want to compete with the best players and learn from the OPC experience,ā explained the quarterback. āWhen you practice and play with the best you will get better.ā
During the offseason, Ethan routinely works out and does cross training at Goodlife Fitness. He believes in developing other muscle groups and becoming an all around athlete. The Steelhawk also worked with a personal trainer, Mike Cowan, to develop strength, speed and core.
Aside from football, he also competed in high school javelin, where he finished second at the city meet and placed seventh at NOSSA.
Moreover, his football role models are his high school coaches, Noah and Barry Rushon. Both have taught him to respect the game and his opponents through their passion for football.
āThey love to teach the sport to players (and) Iām very fortunate to have them as coaches,ā added Ethan. His other role models are his parents since they are always positive and have provided him with every opportunity he needs to excel in the sport.
āMy favourite football player is Cam Newton,ā explained Ethan. āI like the style of game he plays.ā āCam Newton is very athletic, has explosive speed and power. He is very exciting to watch.ā
The quarterback likes football because it is the ultimate team sport, and he loves being a part of their team. āThe thrill of being on the field and part of the game is why I love football,ā added the Steelhawk. āI enjoy matching up our offense against our opponentsā defence.ā
Outside of football, Ethan enjoys school and works hard to achieve good grades. He also spends his free time volunteering for various causes around the city and has collected over 80 hours of community service.
