PLAYOFF PREVIEW (MB): “Next week means nothing if we don’t pull off a win this week”

Canada Football Chat (CFC) continues its post-season coverage of the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) this week. The Steinbach Sabres will be heading to Winnipeg to meet the St.Paul’s Crusaders on Thursday night.

This is the second time both of these teams have met this season. Steinbach beat the Crusaders early in the season but Steinbach’s Logan Beckman is taking that game with a grain of salt.

Beckman said “We beat them in the beginning of the year but that doesn’t mean anything now”.

Steinbach’s record this season was 7-1. The Sabres’ one loss this year was to the hands of the powerful River East Kodiaks.

If the two teams are to meet in the final game, Steinbach’s defence is going to have to try and create some turnovers.

“If our defence does what we usually do- create turnovers, and play smart football that would really help towards a victory over St. Paul’s” added Beckman.

Players to watch on Steinbach: Patrick Maendal (running back), Will Cruise (running back/wide receiver), Darryl Pierre (wide receiver), Dakota Funk (linebacker), Riley Doerksen (linebacker), Mack Dueck (defensive back), Logan Beckman (defensive back), Dylan Friesen (defensive back), CJ Knelsen (quarterback)

The St.Paul’s Crusaders had a good year. St.Paul’s finished with a record of 5 and 3 and recently beat the Elmwood Giants to earn their chance at playing in the Vidruk division bowl game.

Currently the Crusaders are on a hot streak. The last loss the Crusaders suffered was to the hands of the River East Kodiaks. Since their game against River East on October 9th, St.Paul’s has won 4 straight.

I asked Logan Beckman what it feels like to be one game away from the bowl game.

Beckman said “It feels great playing another game and it’s crazy to think that next week is championship weekend. But next week means nothing if we don’t pull off a win this week against St. Paul’s”.
