PRESS RELEASE: SFU LB Griffin Barrett named NCAA All-America Honourable Mention

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — Linebacker Griffin Barrett of Moose Jaw, Sask., has been named to the 2021 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team it was announced today.

Barrett, a linebacker from Moose Jaw, Sask., was NCAA All-America Honourable Mention after he capped off his senior year by leading the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in tackles. He recorded 98 tackles in eight contests, for an average of 12.2 per game, 4.4 more than the next player on the list. Barrett also had a fumble recovery and a tackle for a loss. He wrapped up his outstanding collegiate career with 308 tackles.

Barrett was also selected to 3rd Down Nation’s list of NCAA All-Canadians from among well over 200 student-athletes playing across the FBS, FCS, Division 2, and Division 3 levels. Barrett was joined by Jerrell Cummings (DB) on the First Team, Third Team selections Kolby Buljevic (DB) and Kristie Elliott (Kicker) and Honourable Mentions Evan Currie (DB) and Isaac Evans (DL).

Barrett is the first SFU football player to receive NCAA All-American honours since linebacker Jordan Herdman in 2016. Herdman plays professionally in the CFL for Saskatchewan.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
