WJ MOUAT HAWKS (BCHSFA – ABBOTSFORD, BRITISH COLUMBIA):

For the WJ Mouat Hawks of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA), there is only one expectation they have for their 2014 campaign.

“Our expectation is to make the ‘AAA’ playoffs,” said Hawks Head Coach Denis Kelly, who is back for his 28th year.

Going into this fall season, the Hawks will rely on two key strengths in the hopes that it translates into success.

“Our strengths are our competitive athletes and sound fundamental play,” commented Kelly.

Kieran Testa

Players that will play a significant role in the team’s success are Jacob Dodd, tailback, lineman Kieran Testa, wide receiver/defensive back Slater McRae and wide receiver/linebacker Providence Ndizeye.

As for quarterback depth, grade 12 Noah Falconer and grade 11 Noah Dietrich will be the two pivots. Kelly said two potential surprised who could be poised for breakout seasons are receivers Cole Barker and Elijah Falconer.

Maleek Irons 2

However, the team will have to address gaps due to the departure of several players including CFC 100 Maleek Irons (NCAA – Ohio), tight end/defensive back Jake Firlotte (Queen’s Golden Gaels), lineman Levi Hua (UBC Thunderbirds), linebacker Clovis Lumeka (CJFL) and Hunter Struthers.

“Our weaknesses are our inexperience at virtually all positions and lack of depth,” added Kelly about the team’s potential area of concern but adds that this year’s squad is very coachable.

The Hawks will be a spread offense and a 4-4 defense on the field this fall.

In his assessment of the top teams in the BCHSFA ‘AAA’ Division, Kelly indicated several teams could are front runners for top spot including Terry Fox, St Thomas More Collegiate, Lord Tweedsmuir, Vancouver College and Mount Douglas.
