RECAP: Clan can’t overcome Wolves (stats)

The Simon Fraser University Clan football team could not overcome their mistakes as they fell to the Western Oregon Wolves 38-14 at their first annual Homecoming at Swangard Stadium Saturday afternoon.

SFU turned the ball over four times on offence as it could not get into a consistent rhythm.

β€œWe got 28 first downs and 410 yards passing,” Head Coach Jacques Chapdelaine said after the game. β€œBut we shot ourselves in the foot and at the end of the day it’s like we’re looking for ways to lose.”

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolves got on the board first following a four-yard touchdown run by Joe Harris.

The Clan would respond as the Western Oregon punt returner could not hang onto the ball and fullback Ante Litre (Vancouver, BC) scooped it up giving SFU the ball at the WOU 30 yard line.

Five plays later and running back Chris Tolbert (Silver Springs, MD) punched it in from five yards out to tie the game at seven.

Looking for a spark and down by 17 points just before halftime, quarterback Ryan Stanford (Phoenix, AZ) orchestrated an 11 play 75 yard drive, leading to a nine-yard touchdown pass to running back Cole Tudor (Pickering, ON).

Stanford would finish with 387 yards passing on the day, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

With receiver Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC) out due to illness, Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) stepped up in his place as he hauled in 10 receptions for 145 yards, making many tough catches over the middle of the field.

As well, with Durant out, junior Sam Swerhone (Ridgefield, WA) stepped into the starting lineup and made five receptions for 55 yards in his starter’s debut.

On defence, defensive end Jamie Puffer (Verona, ON) had another sack, giving him three in two games, and finished with five tackles with three being for a loss.

Linebacker Jordan Herdman (Winnipeg, MB) again led the team in tackles with nine.

The school honoured the 1984 football team with a halftime ceremony with a handful of former players on hand.

SFU will now hit the road, after going 0-2 to start the season at home. The Clan will travel down to Azusa, CA where they will face reigning conference champions Azusa Pacific University Cougars at 6pm on September 20th.
