RECAP: Marauders blank Warriors (stats)

It’s often tough to get up for an opponent you are supposed to beat, but the McMaster football team displayed great focus from the opening kick-off and turned in a dominating performance to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 66-0 at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Marauders were able to put points on the board on the team’s first 12 possessions, steadily building the lead while spreading the playing time out among the entire dress list.  Starting quarterback Marshall Ferguson directed the Marauders to a 27-0 lead, before handing the reins to Asher Hastings in the second quarter. Hastings was making his CIS debut and handled the Marauder offense the rest of the game.

The Mac attack got touchdowns from Danny Vandervoort with two, Kingsley Amankwaa, Wayne Moore, Chris Pezzetta, Aaron Baker, and Stephen Kofi-Akuffo, while kicker Tyler Crapigna  made all five of his field goal attempts on the afternoon.

In post-game comments, Marauder Coach Stefan Ptaszek told CHML’s Ted Michaels that the Marauders stayed mentally sharp in a situation when it would have been easy to lose focus. “Our guys played hard from start to finish,” said Ptaszek. “We also cleaned up a lot of areas from week one.”

McMaster had 650 yards of total offense, with Kofi-Akuffo the top rusher with 81 yards on seven carries and Vandervoort the top receiver with five catches for 83 yards.

The touchdowns by Kofi-Akuffo and Baker were the first of their Marauder careers, while Pezzetta found the end-zone again for the first time since the 2011 Vanier Cup.  After missing the previous two seasons due to injury.  Pezzetta told Ted Michaels after the game that every day he is feeling stronger, “I’ve been through a lot in the last two years but I couldn’t ask for anything more. It feels awesome.”

The Marauders improve to 2 and 0 with the win and will next face the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 13 at 1 p.m. at Ron Joyce Stadium.

The McMaster Marauders had a dominating performance outscoring the Warriors 66-0 in front of 2,200 fans on black and gold day at Warrior Field.  The Marauders controlled the game with 348 rushing yards for 650 total yards compared to Waterloo’s 165 total yards.  The Warriors fall to 0-2 on the season while McMaster remains perfect at 2-0.

McMaster’s Asher Hastings caught for 211 yards while S. Kofi-Akuffo had a strong game on the ground, scoring his first OUA touchdown. Waterloo had a tough time offensively withDanny Silvestri (Waterloo) running for 43 yards and Mike Dedys (Mississauga) catching for 63 yards. Lucas McConnell (Waterford) and Jamie Cook (Collingwood) shared pivot roles, going a combined 9-for-21 good for 92 yards.

McMaster wasted little time kick-starting their offence when Tyler Crapigna scored a 13-yard field goal 3:40 into the game. McMaster would dominate the run game early and force the Warriors defence to be left on the field much of the first quarter. The Marauders’ Danny Vandervoort and Kingsley Amankwaa would each add a touchdown before the end of the first quarter to go ahead 17-0.

McMaster would add to the scoring in the second quarter with another field goal by Crapigna and a short touchdown run by Vandervoort to extend the lead to 27-0. Crapigna finished the contest with five field goals. Max Cameron had the catch of the game with a one-handed 37-yard gain, highlighting the Marauders abilities.

Heading into the third quarter down 38-0 the Warriors continued to struggle offensively as the Marauders defence stifled any attempts Waterloo put forth.  Greg Zaitz (Ancaster) andJordan Hoover (Sault Ste. Marie) were strong in defensive roles, making a combined seven unassisted tackles and 13 assisted tackles.

The Marauders’ Chris Pezzetta, Aaron Baker, and Kofi Akuffo would all add majors in the second half to extend the lead and the Marauders would cruise to the 66-0 victory.
Second-string quarterback Lucas McConnell (Waterford) came in for relief of Jamie Cook (Collingwood) in the second half and received player of the game honors for the Waterloo Warriors.

The 2-0 Marauders will return home next week to host the Carleton Ravens in week 3 of OUA action while Waterloo will visit their neighbors the Laurier Golden Hawks for a Saturday afternoon game on Sept. 13.
