RECAP (ONT): Rookie Simmonds powers #CFC10 Saints to win over CFC#46 Knights

#CFC10 fourth ranked St Andrew’s College Saints kicked off their 2015 season by hosting a CFC#46 St Joan of Arc Knights from Barrie. The Saints were dominant on both sides of the ball today and cruised to a 31-8 victory.

Rookie running back Adre Simmonds introduced himself to the Saints community by rushing for four touchdowns and over 250 yards. He flashed an impressive combination of explosive speed and footwork, tremendous vision, and an ability to finish runs with authority.

Quarterback Ben Schmidt was poised and accurate as always, while receivers Will Merkel and Lucas La Brier hauled in key receptions, and tight ends Andrew Biddell and Wells Karabin chipped in with multiple receptions while also providing a physical presence in the ground game.

The offensive line have been a signature of SAC football in recent years, and this year’s group took an impressive first step today in their pursuit of becoming a great unit. Gregor MacKellar, #CFC100 George Hutchings, Lucas Ferreria, Douglas Chen-Young and Cayne Lander played with a lot of toughness and swagger and were tremendous in the “ground and pound” and pass protection.

Defensively, the Saints swarmed a potent Knights offence that features game-breaking speed, a big physical offensive line, and a talented veteran quarterback. Linebackers Nick Grossi, Walter Karabin and Hamza Kabir flew all over the field, making tackles sideline-to-sideline and completely minimizing the ground game. Grossi in particular made several physical plays in key situations.

The defensive line was also outstanding, highlighted by an impressive debut for rookie defensive end Luke Wyatt. The Saints secondary, led by Josh Carter, did a fantastic job in coverage, surrendering only a few completions. The aforementioned Kabir added an interception at a key point in the first half.

Next up for the Saints is another tough home game against a nationally ranked opponent. The Saints will host the Huron Heights Warriors next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
