Regina lineman Jones makes NFL leap

Another Canadian is headed to the NFL.

Yesterday, Brett Jones signed with the New York Giants.Ā  The 6ā€™2, 380 pound offensive lineman from Weyburn, Saskatchewan becomes the fifth former University of Regina Rams player to sign with an NFL team.

Recently, Jones played for the CFLā€™s Calgary Stampeders for two seasons.Ā  In 2014, he was named the leagueā€™s top offensive lineman while guiding the Stampeders to a Grey Cup victory.Ā  In his first season (2013) with the Stampeders, he was selected as CFLā€™s Rookie of the Year.

Jones was drafted in the second round (16th overall pick) by the Stampeders in the 2013 CFL Draft.

Previous to the Stampeders, he suited up for the Rams.Ā  During his time with the CWUAA team, Jones won numerous honours including three Academic All-Canadian honours (20010-2012 inclusively), two CIS First Team All-Canadian honours (2011, 2012), two CWUAA All-Star selections (2011, 2012) and CWUAA Outstanding Lineman Award (2012).

The offensive lineman played high school football for Weyburn Composite Eagles of the Moose Jaw High School Football League (MJHSFL).

In addition to Jones, four other former Rams are on NFL rosters ā€“ Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan, Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Stefan Charles, Kansas City Chiefs longsnapper Jorgen Hus and New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Akiem Hicks.
