OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the appointments of Dick White and Thérèse Quigley as CIS president and president elect, respectively.
White, who just wrapped up his 18th season as director of athletics at the University of Regina, began a one-year interim term at the CIS annual general meeting held earlier this month in Toronto. It marks his third tour of duty as president of the national governing body of university sport as he previously held the position on two occasions between 2004 and 2009.
Quigley, the director of sports and recreation services at Western University since 2009, will begin her two-year term as president at the 2014 CIS AGM.
“We’re very excited to welcome Dick and Thérèse as president and president elect,” said Pierre Lafontaine, chief executive officer of CIS. “They are both accomplished leaders not only in university sports but in the overall Canadian sport system and there is no doubt they will lead CIS to new heights. We are all looking forward to their guidance over the next few years.”
White is no stranger to the CIS board of directors. In addition to his two stints as president, he has previously held the portfolios of vice-president marketing, vice-president sport, as well as chair of the international committee. He also served as chef de mission of Team Canada at the 2005 Winter Universiade in Austria.
A graduate of the U of R, he joined Cougar Athletics in 1981 and moved into his current position in 1995.
Prior to returning to her alma mater in 2009, Quigley spent 18 years as director of athletics and recreation at McMaster University. When she took the position in 1990, she became the first female AD at an Ontario-based university.
A former volleyball standout at Western, she represented Canada in the sport at the 1973 Summer Universiade in Moscow and went on to coach at the University of Alberta and McMaster. The award presented annually to the CIS women’s volleyball player who best exhibits excellence in athletics, academics and community involvement is named in her honour.
Quigley was president of Canada Basketball from 2008 to 2011 and received the International Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of College Director of Athletics (NACDA) in 2003.
White is the only CIS president from the U of R in the history of the organization, while Quigley will become only the second from Western. She will follow in the footsteps of Dr. Duncan McLarty, who was the inaugural CIAU (now CIS) president from 1961 to 1963.
2013-14 CIS Board of Directors
In addition to White and Quigley, the CIS board of directors welcomed another new member at the June AGM, as Bob Copeland from the University of Waterloo was appointed vice-president of marketing and communications.
As well, Leo MacPherson from St. Francis Xavier University, who completed his two-year term as CIS president earlier this month, will remain on the board as the representative of the Atlantic University Sport regional association. He will also assume the role of CIS past president for the next 12 months.
