SASK HIGH SCHOOL RECAP (4): CFC#6 Golden Suns & CFC#9 Tartans win big, Payne & Hagerman light it up in Moose Jaw

Another week of action is in the books in the high school football season in Saskatchewan.

Here is a glimpse of some of the games that took place in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.

SCHWANN CONFERENCE (4A):

CFC#6 LEBOLDUS GOLDEN SUNS 44, SHELDON WILLIAMS SPARTANS 16:

Under Friday Night Lights, Brayden Kuski completed 15 passes in 21 attempts for 261 yards and four passing touchdowns as CFC#6 LeBoldus Golden Suns cruised to a 44-16 victory over Sheldon Williams Spartans.

Semba Mbasela scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) and rushed for 79 yards on 12 carries.Β  Finley Easton tallied two majors and racked up 75 yards on two receptions for the Golden Suns.Β  Additionally, Michael Scraper added a score and amassed 132 yards on six receptions.

β€œThe key to victory for LeBoldus included a strong passing game by Brayden KuskiΒ as well as solid rushing/receiving by Semba Mbasela,” assessed Golden Suns Head Coach John Foord after the victory.Β  β€œOther keys to victory include great run defence and 7-1 +6 for LeBoldus in the turnovers category.”

β€œThe areas to improve include excessive avoidable penalties and mental mistakes and missed system assignments.”

CFC#9 CAMPBELL TARTANS 75, THOM TROJANS 13:

On Friday evening, Yianni Maragos scored three touchdowns (including one receiving) and rushed for 85 yards on four carries as CFC#9 Campbell Tartans crushed Thom Trojans 75-13.

Brayden Wagg completed six passes in eight attempts for 140 yards and two passing touchdowns. Moreover, Matt Rivers completed five passes in 13 attempts for 39 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Tartans.

Kyle Hoffert tallied a major and rushed for 65 yards on five carries. Miguel Kukura added a score and racked up 51 yards on two receptions in the win.Β  Avery Pierce and Bennett Stusek each had kickoff return touchdowns.

On defence, Josh White caught an interception and ran it into the end zone for a score.Β  White was also the team’s leading tackler. Avery Tiefenbach recorded two quarterback sacks while Kane Knauss, Dyson Nordwick-Chan and Josh Hagerty each caught an interception.

β€œThough we don’t feel good about having such a lopsided score in the game, we felt good that all of our younger players were able to get a lot of playing time and some valuable game experience,” expressed Tartans Head Coach Ryan Hall.Β  β€œWe were pleased that all of the players maintained their focus and execution throughout the game.”

SASKATOON SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTORATE (SSSAD):

EVAN HARDY SOULS 21, PRINCE ALBERT ST. MARY’S MARAUDERS 15:

Last Thursday afternoon, Kyle Newton caught two interceptions, including a timely one late in the game as the Evan Hardy Souls hung on to a 21-15 win over Prince Albert St. Mary’s Marauders.

β€œThe Evan Hardy Souls defeated the Prince Albert St. Mary’s Marauders thanks to a strong defensive performance with a lot of injuries on the offensive side,” said Souls Defensive Coordinator Wyatt Carleton after the game.Β  β€œThe defence came to play.”

β€œWe had three starting receivers and two linemen out last Thursday going into our game. Defensively, we held them almost all game and kept on grinding. Two big first quarter punt blocks by the unit set up two scores in a turnover ridden game. Kyle Newton had his strongest game yet along with a two interception performance, including one to seal the win and end their late game drive in our red zone by senior safety Cody Walker.

This was a pivotal win for the Souls, heading into the next stretch. Ultimately, the team hopes to carry the momentum into their next contest.

β€œThe win brought us back to 500 (2-2) as we begin our divisional games against a rival, a team we haven’t beat in six years, Bishop James Mahoney,” added Carleton. Β β€œIt’s a big game for the Souls and it should be fun.”

MOOSE JAW HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (MJHSFL):

PEACOCK TORNADOES 60, VANIER VIKINGS 0:

On Saturday, Kyle Arndt was unstoppable as he tallied five majors (including three in the opening quarter) and amassed 191 yards as the Peacock Tornadoes dismantled the Vanier Vikings 60-0.

Park Andrews connected with both Dawson Kurz (27 yards) and Meko Cridland (13 yards) for touchdowns. Β Ben Helland also added a 65 yard touchdown reception for the Tornadoes.

The Tornadoes defence stepped up their game as they held Vikings offensive threat Kelton Kouri to 25 yards on 26 carries.Β  Additionally, the unit only gave up six first downs to their opponents.

CENTRAL CYCLONES 43, YORKTON RAIDERS 36:

At Gutheridge Field on Saturday, Zach Hagerman scored a touchdown and amassed 321 rushing yards as the Central Cyclones defeated Yorkton Raiders 43-36.

Aidan Baillie tallied an eight yard major while Jonah Branning added two touchdowns in the win.Β  Pivot Ryan Reidy also added a score.

For the Raiders, Nick Payne racked up 468 yards and three passing touchdowns.Β  Additionally, Matthew MandziukΒ scored twice and had 201 receiving yards.Β  Jonathan Nagy tallied a major and had 131 receiving yards in the loss.
