TORONTO β William Powell, Jumal Rolle and Ryan Lankford were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 7 of the CFLβs 2019 season.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
RB | WILLIAM POWELL | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS
On the strength of a hat trick of scores from running back William Powell, Saskatchewan climbed back to the .500 mark. The win also gave the Roughriders a home and home sweep of the BC Lions.
The Kansas State alumnus recorded 21 carries for 146 yards (7.0 yards per carry) while establishing a new career-high for majors in a single game.
With under three minutes left in the half, Cody Fajardo handed off a draw play to Powell. Just as it looked like he was going to be tackled for a minimal gain, he bolted free from a group of players to score on a 42-yard run, which extended the Roughridersβ lead to 25-3.
Powellβs second major came in the third from eight yards out, and he completed his night with a one-yard plunge to cap off an 11-play, 66-yard drive in the fourth.
On the season, Powell has rushed for 469 yards (averaging 5.1 yards per carry) and leads the league with six rushing touchdowns this season.
DB | JUMAL ROLLE | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS
Jumal Rolle snagged two interceptions to help Hamilton hand Winnipeg its first loss of the season β a 23-15 setback on Friday Night. The Tiger-Cats are now off to their best start since 1998.
The Wilson, N.C., nativeβs first interception on the year came in the first quarter when Matt Nichols overthrew his receiver. Rolle returned it 45 yards to the Blue Bombersβ one-yard line to set up a Dane Evans TD. Just before the end of the opening half, Rolle notched his second interception and returned it 15 yards.
Rolleβs performance doubled his number of career interceptions, and he added four tackles in the game.
REC | RYAN LANKFORD | BC LIONS
BC Lions returner Ryan Lankford made his presence felt in their game against Saskatchewan on Saturday.
Late in the first half, Saskatchewan attempted a 42-yard field goal that went wide. Lankford caught the ball eight yards inside his own endzone and proceeded to run it back 118 yards to trim the Lionsβ deficit to 26-9. With just over three minutes left in the third quarter, Lankford returned a kickoff 89 yards for the major.
Chris Rainey was the last player to return two kicks for a TD in the same game β a feat he accomplished in 2015 as a member of the Lions.
In just his second game with the team, the six-year CFL veteran mustered 277 combined kick return yards.
