Shaw CFL top performers (8): Bethel-Thompson, Dedmon, Fajardo named

TORONTO — Mcleod Bethel-Thompson, DeVonte Dedmon and Cody Fajardo were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 8 of the CFL’s 2019 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | MCLEOD BETHEL-THOMPSON | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

On Thursday night, the Toronto Argonauts upset Winnipeg 28-27 in dramatic fashion thanks to McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

The native of San Francisco completed 37-of-49 (75.5%) pass attempts for 343 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 44 rushing yards.

Late in the first half, he found Rodney Smith for a 12-yard touchdown pass to cut the Blue Bombers’ advantage to 20-9. Midway through the third quarter, Bethel-Thompson found offensive lineman, Jamal Campbell, for a one-yard touchdown pass.

His final touchdown pass completed the Argonauts’ 20-point comeback. With 1:41 left on the clock and Toronto on their own 38-yard line, Bethel-Thompson orchestrated a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to S.J. Green with only 13 seconds left. Tyler Crapigna kicked the convert to give Toronto the victory.

The Sacramento State product has now recorded 300+ passing yards on four occasions this year, and it was his second game passing for three touchdowns.

On the season, Bethel-Thompson has completed 66% of his passes for 1,592 yards and 10 touchdowns.

REC | DEVONTE DEDMON | OTTAWA REDBLACKS

Ottawa return man DeVonte Dedmon from Williamsburg, Va., set a new franchise record with 382 combined return yards to help the REDBLACKS defeat Montreal 30-27 in overtime to snap a four-game losing streak.

Dedmon scored two kick-return touchdowns in the game.

Following a Vernon Adams Jr. touchdown in the first quarter, Dedmon returned a Boris Bede kickoff 111 yards for his first-career major in the CFL.

It didn’t take long for the rookie CFLer to collect his second kick-return TD. With the first half winding down, the Williams & Mary product pinballed his way through a maze of Montreal defenders and returned it 95 yards to cut the lead to 17-14.

Dedmon accumulated 382 combined return yards — 187 on kickoffs, 189 on punt returns and six more on a missed field goal – to set a new Ottawa record and reach second most on the all-time list.

QB | CODY FAJARDO | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Cody Fajardo and the Saskatchewan Roughriders extended their winning streak to three games with a thrilling 24-19 win over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Fajardo passed for 313 yards, while completing an efficient 25-of-31 passes (80.6%), marking the third time this year that he has surpassed the 300+ passing yard barrier. He added 56 rushing yards, including a crucial rushing touchdown.

The former member of the Nevada Wolfpack continues to show great chemistry with Shaq Evans, who recorded seven receptions for a game-high 160 yards.

The Brea, Calif., native’s rushing touchdown came on the Roughriders’ final possession of the game. With the clock running down, Fajardo called his number and dove to the pylon to put the Riders ahead with only 24 seconds remaining.

On the season, Fajardo has passed for 1,705 yards and has tallied 13 total touchdowns (seven pass and six rush).
