Singleton, Wilder and Zylstra named Shaw CFL Top Performers

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 — TORONTO (October 4th, 2017) – Alex Singleton, James Wilder Jr. and Brandon Zylstra were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month for September of the CFL’s 2017 season.

Performer of the Month for September includes all appearances from Week 11 to Week 15.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

LB | ALEX SINGLETON |CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Alex Singleton collected 46 defensive tackles and two sacks in September, continuing his standout performance in his sophomore season.

In the Stampeders’ Labour Day Classic victory, Singleton hauled in a career-high 13 defensive tackles, including a quarterback sack. Singleton’s total was just three tackles short of tying the single-game CFL record held by Reggie Hunt.

The Montana State alum collected 11 tackles each in Weeks 12 and 13, continuing stellar play that has been a strong part of Calgary’s winning ways.

Singleton has now recorded 10+ tackles four times in 2017, and notched 11+ tackles in three consecutive weeks in September, making him the first CFL player in history to do so.

The native of Thousand Oaks, CA is first in the CFL with 102 defensive tackles. Singleton was named a Shaw Top Performer in Weeks 11 and 13.

RB | JAMES WILDER JR. | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

James Wilder Jr. collected 389 rushing yards on 36 carries this month for an September average of 10.8 yards/carry in addition to his 176 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Wilder set two new career bests in September, including a 76-yard carry in Week 13 that at the time was the longest of his season for his first CFL touchdown. He beat his own record the following week with an 85-yard run, the longest of the season and the club’s longest since Chuck Ealey’s 1976 86-yard run.

His 190 rushing yards against Edmonton in Week 13 was the fourth-highest single-game total in Argos franchise history. His 77 receiving yards in Week 14 was a new personal best (beating out his 67 yards on seven receptions in Week 13).

In just two games, Wilder collected 475 total yards. His 331 rushing yards in Weeks 13 and 14 were the most in Toronto’s modern era, surpassing Cory Boyd’s 290 yards over a two-game period in 2010. The two-game total ranks 17th all-time among two-game rushing totals, and were the most since Jon Cornish rushed for 338 yards in 2013.

Wilder ranks sixth in the league in rushing yards with 552. He received Shaw Top Performer honours in Weeks 13 and 14.

WR | BRANDON ZYLSTRA | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Brandon Zylstra caught passes at a blistering pace in September, racking up 532 receiving yards on 31 receptions including two touchdowns in four games.

His season-best performance came in Week 12 with 187 yards on 10 receptions, including a 67-yard catch – his longest since Week 1. He eclipsed the 100-yard barrier in Week 11 (127 yards) and Week 15 (152 yards).
