St. Albert recruit ‘grateful’ for Golden Bear opportunity

St. Albert linebacker opts for local CWUAA team.

Proximity was important for Nick Cowan when it came to deciding his gridiron and academic future.

The 6ā€™5, 190 pound linebacker from St. Albert recently signed with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Cowan will join the team for the 2015 CWUAA season.

ā€œI decided to go to the University of Alberta as it is close to home where my parents will be able to see my home games,ā€ elaborated Cowan of his commitment.Ā  ā€œCoach [Chris] Morris is working really hard to turn the program around and I am grateful that he and his staff have given me an opportunity to take football to the next level.ā€

ā€œThe University of Alberta gives me a chance to compete for a starting role in a few years. It is also a very prestigious place to receive an education from.ā€

Cowan recently completed his high school career with Bellrose Bulldogs of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA).Ā  This past season, the linebacker registered 88 tackles, four forced fumbles and a touchdown. He has been awarded both Defensive and Special Teams MVP.
