NFC: Steelers have offensive explosion to gain sole possession of top spot in West, Invaders & Hawkeyes win
The Sault Ste Marie Steelers brought out all their offensive weapons to win their fourth consecutive game while strengthening their lead in the Western Conference of the National Football Conference (NFC).
Josh Gauthier led the Steelers to a 69-7 victory over the Sudbury Spartans. The Steelers running back was unstoppable on the field as he scored four touchdowns in the victory – two in the first quarter on 30 yard and 103 yard runs as well as two in the third quarter on seven yard and 25 yard runs.
He now leads the league in average yards per carry (15.3) while amassing 825 rushing yards. In Saturday’s game, he had 249 rushing yards on 14 carries (17.8 yards per carry).
Steelers quarterback Frank Wiese connected with slotback Kyle Gauthier for two touchdowns in the first quarter (37 yards) and the fourth quarter (55 yards). Gauthier also added a 60 yard punt return touchdown in the third quarter.
James Castellani also found the end zone once while running back Matt Buchan accumulated 70 yards on eight carries for the Steelers.
The Steelers defense mount a successful wall against the Spartans – the opposition could only amount 280 yards (132 rushing, 148 receiving). It was a long night for Spartans quarterback Travis Campbell, who only had eight completions in 26 attempts and running back Josh Cuomo who only had 86 rushing yards on 16 carries (5.4 yards per carry).
In other NFC action, the Durham Hawkeyes breezed by the Toronto Raiders 42-12. Kicker Dimitru Inoita was successful on two field goal attempts (18, 30 yards) while adding five PATS to lead the way for the Hawkeyes. Quarterback Cody Enman connected with Justene Edwards (eight yards), Ricky Clarke (18 yards) and Ryan Thompson (42 yards) for touchdown scores.
Meanwhile, the Ottawa Invaders kept paced with the Hawkeyes in the East Division as the team got by the Tri-City Outlaws 30-13. In the first quarter, Invaders quarterback Jeff Hildreth connected with Danny Mullins for a 21 yard major in the first quarter while TJ Williams, Adam Gourgon and Eddie Brown all found the end zone in the victory.
In the East Division, the Invaders, Hawkeyes and Montreal Transit all have 3-1 records while the Toronto Raiders sit in last place with a 1-4 record. Meanwhile in the West Division, the Steelers are atop with a 4-1 mark. The Outlaws are in second place with a 3-2 record while Sarnia Imperials are 1-2 and the Spartans are 1-4. The Oakville Longhorns are still seeking their first victory as they are currently 0-3 on the season.
