AUS POW: Scott, Melanson, and Saumure honoured

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – Saint Mary’s Huskies quarterback Kaleb Scott, along with defensive tackle Adam Melanson and kicker Jarett Saumure, both from the Acadia Axemen, have been selected as the Week 6 AUS football players of the week for their respective performances this past weekend.

Saint Mary’s Huskies quarterback Kaleb Scott is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2017.

A third-year arts student from Mount Albert, Ont., Scott went 22 for 33 for 288 yards passing and a passing touchdown in the Huskies’ 22-21 come-from-behind victory over the StFX X-Men Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

His stats also included 10 carries for 68 yards and a rushing touchdown in the win.

This is the second consecutive week Scott has earned this award as the top offensive player in the conference.

Acadia Axemen defensive tackle Adam Melanson has been named the AUS football defensive player of the week.

A fifth-year education student from Kentville, N.S., Melanson had 2.5 sacks in Acadia’s 33-14 win over the Mount Allison Mounties.

He finished the game with four tackles for loss and 19 total loss yards. His defensive stats also included 5.5 total tackles (three solo and five assisted).

Following this past weekend’s win, Melanson has now amassed 16.5 career sacksā€”the ninth most in AUS conference history and the fifth most in Acadia school history.

Acadia Axemen kicker Jarett Saumure is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2017.

A first-year kinesiology student from Timberlea, N.S., Saumure was successful on all four of his field goal attempts in Acadia’s 33-14 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday in Wolfville, N.S.

He also made good on all three point-after attempts for 15 total points in the win.

The Rouge et Or quarterback threw for over 300 yards for the fourth time in five games on the season, piling up 376 yards in a 34-0 win over McGill. Hugo Richard completed 32-of-40 passes (80%) and tossed two touchdown passes. Richard is currently the top-rated QB in the RSEQ as he leads the conference in completion percentage (75%), touchdown passes (9) and passing yards (1,594).

Highlights:

Defensive end Mathieu Betts had a dominant game against McGill with 3.5 sacks. He helped lead the Rouge et Or to their 34-0 shutout win with his sacks, 4.5 tackles, including three solos and he batted down a pass as well. Betts now finds himself only one sack away from the Laval club record of 26.5 held by Vincent Desloges who sits fourth all-time in RSEQ history.

The young veteran and sophomore enjoyed a perfect day, connecting on all three of his field goal attempts (17, 19 and 34 yards) and all three of his extra points to post 12 of Sherbrookeā€™s 30 points in its important and first win of the season over the Stingers at Concordia. Dā€™Astous perfectly executed an onside kick in the opening quarter which was recovered by the Vert & Or to help set up a scoring drive for Sherbrooke.

OUA POW:Ā Ā Augustine,Ā Bennett,Ā Soares named

Offense: Johnny Augustine, Guelph Gryphons

Gryphonsā€™ fifth year running back Johnny Augustine provided the heroics on Saturday in a wild, 53-49 GryphonsĀ victory over the Waterloo Warriors.

Augustine, who finished the day with 107 all-purpose yards of offence (91 rushing, 16 receiving), scored the game-winning touchdown on a 22-yard run with just 0:22 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter to complete the GryphonsĀ comeback.

The Sociology major finished matched a career-high by scoring three touchdowns on the day, the last of which capped an explosive 27-point 4th quarter for the Gryphs. Guelph found themselves trailing by 20 points in the 3rd quarter, but back-to-back touchdowns from Augustine changed the score from 32-12 to 32-26, with the pair of Augustine TD’s coming just 0:36 seconds apart.

Defense: Jackson Bennett, Ottawa Gee Gees

In what was a back and forth Panda Game that came right down to the wire, Ottawaā€™s Jackson Bennett proved to be a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball all game long in front of the 24,420 fans.

Despite his teamā€™s 33-30 2OT loss, Bennett stymied the Ravens offense on several occasions, en route to a team-leading 7.5 tackles, which included an assisted tackle for a loss. Not only that, but Bennett also made his presence felt when it mattered most, breaking up a pair of passes in the end zone to keep the Ravensā€™ touchdown hopes at bay, while also recording an interception on the day.

To cap off his impressive outing, the Gee Gees standout also returned four kickoffs for a total of 88 yards.

Special Teams: Quinton Soares, Carleton Ravens

Third-year receiver Quinton Soares made a big impact in Carleton’s 33-30 Panda Game victory over uOttawa on Saturday, September 30. Soares was Carleton’s special teams MVP in the team’s biggest win of the season, providing the Ravens with excellent returns throughout the game.

Soares’ top moment in the game, however, came on his 84-punt return for TD to open the game’s scoring in the first quarter. Soares set single-game career highs in kick return yardage (91) as well as punt return yardage (143).

CWUAA POW: Ilnicki,Ā Boechler,Ā Rowe named

EDMONTON ā€“ Another monster day from Ed Ilnicki propelled the Alberta Golden Bears to their first win of 2017 and earned the veteran running back Canada West football player of the week honours, which were handed out Monday.

Ilnicki posted the top conference performance on offence thanks to his 278 rushing yards and 63 receiving yards in Alberta’s 36-25 Week 5 win over the Manitoba Bisons. A 2017 draft pick of the Ottawa REDBLACKS, Ilnicki leads CW in rushing yards with 829, as the conference enters its annual Thanksgiving week bye.

Defensively, Brett Boechler earned the defensive player of the week award after registering 12 tackles in the Huskies 50-40 loss to the Regina Rams, while Calgary’s Boston Rowe is the special teams player of the week after forcing a kickoff return fumble in the Dinos’ 31-17 win over UBC, as Calgary maintained sole possession of first-place in the conference standings.

After a weekend off, Canada West football action returns Saturday, October 14 with a trio of games, including a pair of CW Football Showcase games. Both the Regina-Alberta (1 p.m. MDT) and UBC-Saskatchewan (7 p.m. CST) games can be seen across the CW football network ā€“ SaskTel (Saskatchewan), TELUS (Alberta and B.C.), and Bell MTS (Manitoba) ā€“ while the Manitoba-Calgary (1 p.m. MDT) game can be viewed exclusively on Canada West TV.

For a second consecutive time, Alberta Golden Bear Ed Ilnicki is the offensive player of the week. The fifth-year running back rumbled for 278 yards on 44 carries in Alberta’s 36-25 win over the Manitoba Bisons Friday night.

Ilnicki found the end zone once for the Bears, and also added 63 receiving yards to post 341 all-purpose yards in the Green and Gold’s first victory of the season.

After five weeks, Ilnicki leads Canada West in every major rushing category, including yards with 829 on the year. Also impressive, Ilnicki has six touchdowns on the season and not a single fumble to his name.

Ilnicki is the first Golden Bear to win multiple player of the week honours in the same season since teammate Tylor Henry was the special teams player of the week twice in 2013 (Week 3 and 8).

On defence, Saskatchewan Huskie Brett Boechler posted the top conference performance from Week 5, as the second-year defensive back earned a career high 12 tackles in the Huskies 50-40 loss to the Regina Rams.

Boechler’s dozen tackles is the highest total by a Canada West player this season. The Arts and Science student now has 27.5 tackles on the year ā€“ good for sixth in the conference.

Rounding out the Week 5 winners is Calgary Dino Boston Rowe, who earns special teams honours after a forced fumble and two special teams tackles in Calgary’s 31-17 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.

With first-place heading into the bye week on the line, Rowe forced a kickoff return fumble on what would’ve been a 58-yarder from UBC’s Trivel Pinto’s early in the third quarter. That play helped snuff out any momentum for the host T-Birds, as Calgary improved their record to 5-0.
