Warriors announce coaching staff

Waterloo Warriors football head coach Chris Bertoia is pleased to announce the programs coaching staff for the 2017 season.  The Warriors staff will have all but one familiar face returning as Defensive Coordinator Matt Robichaud has resigned his position.

“First off I’d like to recognize and thank Matt for his loyalty and effort in helping us develop our rebuilding football program over the last two years, he will be greatly missed.” said Bertoia.

The Warriors are in full rebuild mode since Bertoia arrived a little over two years ago.  With this in mind Bertoia stated “It’s very important to try and maintain continuity in a coaching staff as you’re building a program, thus I believed it is in the programs best interest to promote internally and increase a few of our current staff members roles and responsibilities.”

Bertoia has promoted 2016 Special Teams Coordinator & Recruiting Coordinator Darrell Adams to the role of Defensive Coordinator.  Darrell will continue in his role as the teams Recruiting Coordinator.  Bertoia stated “Darrell has done a fantastic job developing our players and in his role as recruiting coordinator over the past year, he’s ready for this new challenge, he is the right coach to lead our defense moving forward.”

Replacing Adams as the Special Teams Coordinator will be Brendan Conway (Burlington).  Conway was the linebackers coach for 2016 with Waterloo and is recognized as a very good young and upcoming coach.  Currently the Head Coach of the JV Twin City Predators, Conway recently traveled to Texas as the linebackers coach with U16 Team Ontario.  “Brendan has demonstrated a great work ethic and desire to continually develop as a young coach, I have full confidence in Brendan and am excited to watch him continue to grow as a coach and lead our special teams.”

Coach Bertoia is very pleased to announce the signing of two former long standing members of the McMaster Marauder football coaching staff that will be helping him on the offensive side of the ball.  Jon Behie will assume the role of Pass Game Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach effective immediately.  Behie finished his 10th season coaching with the Marauder program this past fall.  Behie worked with former Marauders head coach Stefan Ptaszek to develop one of the most potent offences in CIS football, and helped the team to Yates Cup titles in 2011, 2012, and 2014, and McMaster first Vanier Cup Championship in 2011.

“Our football program continues to grow and develop, with the addition of Coach Behie we look forward to better results in 2017.  Jon has demonstrated the ability to be an elite football coach, he has wealth of experience, and has worked with other great coaches on that McMaster staff.  I look forward to working alongside Jon in continuing to develop our young offence.”

Joining Coach Behie as a new staff addition to the offensive side of the ball is Ryan Loveday.  Loveday enters his first season with the Warriors coaching staff as an Offensive Assistant and Game Day Coordinator.  Loveday joins the Warriors after a three year playing career and eight year coaching career at McMaster in the roles of Film and Scout Team Coordinator, Offensive Assistant, and Game Day Coordinator.  Loveday has also coached with the Twin Cities Predators (OFC).  Loveday attended high school and played football at KCI in Kitchener.

“I’m excited to have an opportunity to work with Ryan, he comes to the program with a great deal of respect and is a skilled offensive coach.  Ryan has multiple skills both on and off the field that will benefit our growth as a football program moving forward,” concluded Bertoia.
