Wilson Challenge 2012: U-15 preview

It is once again time for the Wilson Challenge, one of Canada’s top minor tournaments. The tournament previews some of the best young talent in Canada in both the u-15 and u-17 divisions. Here is a look at the u-15 division.

The 2012 edition of the Wilson Challenge will be held from July 6th to 15th at three different sites in Quebec.Β Β The finals for both age groups will be held as usual at McGill’s Percival Molson Stadium (July 14 & 15) in Montreal;Β Β and all 8 placement games will be β€˜live streamed’ through a High Definition (HD) Pay-Per-View (PPV) network on CanadaFootballChat.com.

The 2012 tournament will feature a total of 8 teams. Last year’s defending champion Rive Sud de QuΓ©bec will once again participate in the tournament and looking to once again defend their title. The competition is looking to be very strong as all 8 teams have some weapons on both sides of the ball. The Wilson Challenge has a very good reputation around the football world and is a tournament that helps the development of our young athletes. The fans are never disappointed and this tournament showcases the future of the game we love.

Here is a look at the teams:

Monstars de MontrΓ©al

The Montreal Monstars have always been one of the top programs in the Tournament. In past tournaments, their performances have been impressive having finished in the top 3 in the last 4 years and also winning the tournament on 2 occasions. Led by a groupe of elite coaches, the Monstars are expecting the same of their players in this years event.

MontrΓ©al-MΓ©tro All Stars

Head Coach Stephane Groulx believes that his football team should finish in the top 4 with a good mix of veterans and rookies on both sides of the ball. He believes in playing as a team and if his team commits to that goal, they should be contenders. coming off a 2nd place finish in 2011 and having been in the top 3 for the last 3 tournaments. The team is looking to bring home a title.

Elites WMFL (Western Minor Football League)

This team will new to the tournament this season and are looking to make an impact. The team has good football players both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Coming to the tournament will also help their athletes gain experience and showcase what the Western Minor Football League has to offer.

Γ‰quipe mΓ©tro-scolaire

This team is looking strong and are looking to turn heads in the 2012 Wilson Challenge. Having finished in 4th and 5th place in the 2 previous tournaments. The team is looking to make their way in the top 3. They feel like they are heading in the right direction and become better as a unit. The team has good number of veterans back in the lineup and have experience on both sides of the ball.

Rive-Sud de QuΓ©bec

The defending Champions from 2011 are once again looking very strong and looking to hold on to their title. Having a few good returnees will help the squad defend the title as some players do have experience playing in this tournament before and also playing under pressure. The team has not been around for a long time but have proven to be contenders in both years they have participated. Led by an elite coaching staff, the players learn and become better every practice.

MontΓ©rΓ©gie

Coming off a 7th place finish in 2011, Monteregie is looking to show that their players are more prepared and ready for a more successful tournament. Having gained experience in 2011 and having weapons on both sides of the ball. They look for better results come 2012. They have also added various rookies on their squad making them a dangerous team.

Laval-Laurentides-Lanaudière

As they make their first appearence in the u-15 division, the team and region have been known to produce some very explosive football players. The talent is present and opposition coaches are expecting this team to be a good one. Having an experienced coaching staff and good players. This team could be the surprise of the tournament.

Estrie / Centre du QuΓ©bec

Head Coach Marc-Andre Desrochers is looking for his troops to gain experience and get closer as a team. He does have high expectations and believes his team can have a very strong tournament if they work together. Estrie possesses some good talent on both sides of the ball. Players to watch are Running backs: FΓ©lix Lussier-Roy et FΓ©lix Petit and on the defensive side of the ball, Linebackers: Jean-Simon Gouin et Boka CΓ©dric Kouao. The players have an exceptional coaching staff to work with and are getting better everyday. Coming off an 8th place finish in 2011, Estrie is looking to make their way up in the standings.

Some great football will be played in the Wilson Challenge and many of these young athletes are trying to find their way to the next level. It is great opportunity to participate and also watch the tournament.

Tournament news:

The big news is the opening match of the tournament in the Under-17 (U17) category that will be held in Quebec (CΓ©gep de LΓ©vis-Lauzon) between South Shore (Champions 2011) and Elites Quebec (returning in the tournament after a year’s absence).
Again this year, eight teams in both the Under-15 and U17 age categories will compete for top honors at the most prestigious football tournament in Quebec.Β Β Over 900 players and 150 coaches will attend the 16th edition of the Wilson Challenge.Β Β Nova Scotia will be entering a team in the U17 category.
