Windsor NFL star O.J. Atogwe remembers his roots

WINDSOR, Ont. β€” Oshiomogho Atogwe has reached the pinnacle of professional sports as a star in the National Football League without ever forgetting his Windsor roots.

A two-time MVP safety with the St. Louis Rams, Atogwe has created three scholarships worth $10,000 each for senior students in Essex County planning to attend college or university.

Since establishing a charitable foundation last year, Atogwe has poured at least $130,000 back into his hometown community. In addition to the three scholarships, he’s given the athletic department at Herman, his old high school, $50,000, Windsor minor football $30,000 and Essex Ravens’ football $20,000.

Of the scholarships, one will be for male students and named in honour of Harry Lumley, Atogwe’s football coach at Herman. Another will be for female students and given in memory of Atogwe’s high school friend, Jacqueline Moore, who died last fall at age 28 from cardiac arrest.

A third scholarship will target students of African descent and be given in memory of his grandfather, John Atogwe.

β€œHe’s never forgotten where he came from and he never will,” Lumley said of his former all-star, who is of Nigerian descent. β€œHe’s an amazing kid and a great role model.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
