The National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) completed Championship Week with some very exciting football.Β The Orleans Bengals organized this great event and hosted the football community at Millenium Sports Park.
NCAFA President Stephen Dean commented by saying βSome great football played over the past week with new Champions at virtually every level. An overtime thriller on Sunday at PeeWee and a special congratulations to the West Carleton Wolverines on their first A Cup Championship at any level.β
Dean added βI want to thank the Orleans Bengals organization for being gracious hosts and for running an excellent event. The setup and execution of all parts of the event went off without a hitch. The grass field did not present any major issues and the sun actually came out for most of Sunday’s A Final games.β
Orleans Bengals VP Operations Aldege Bellefeuille said βChampionship Week this year was a huge success and the Orleans Bengals Football Club wanted to express our sincere gratitude to all of the clubs, players, coaches and representatives. Our volunteers, led by our VP-Admin, Alison Owen had nothing but positive things to say about your clubs. In fact, Alison and her team did a superb job and our club could not have done it without her.β
Bellefeuille went on to say βThank you to Steve Dean and Gord Champagne – they were godsend Ambassadors for NCAFA. Along with NCAFA Executive and all of our clubs, it is no wonder why we have the best football organziation from coast-to-coast-to-coast.β
Tyke
The Gloucester South Raiders won the Tyke C-cup, scoring 3 consecutive TD’s after falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter to the East Ottawa Generals.Β Mark Webb and Ben Kuntz scored for thee Generals while Johnny Aoude, Justin Roy and Bradly Peters scored the majors for the Raiders. The defense was led by Shane Cabral, Xzaivious Vaillancourt and Aaron Klassen.
A 55-1 win over the Myers Riders capped a magical undefeated season and second straight city championship for the tyke Cumberland Panthers. A defence led by Ryan Stansel, Darius McKenzie and Patrick Massicotte (who had a fumble recovery return for TD) finished the season not allowing a TD to any opponent. The offence had trouble getting going in the first quarter but then rallied with 8 TDs in the last three quarters with season long standouts Fabrice Mukendi, Markeydean Nelson and Christian Veilleux providing the spark needed to complete the championship win!”
Mosquito
In Gilchrist cup final action the game turned into a duel between two great running backs as the West Carleton Wolverines defeated the Nepean Redskins 70-57. Hayden Tripp was named MVP of the game for the Wolverines. Justin Yee and Emma Van Wyk-Kucharik also were major contributors to the offense. Although not a lot of defense played on this day the Wolverines defence tightened up particularly in the 3rd quarter to ensure the win. Blake Thompson, Jamie Smith, Cameron Weaver and Hugh Russell all made big plays to snuff out Redskins drives.
The Bell Warriors squad held off a tough Orleans Bengals side 22-6 to capture the B Cup. Another multiple touchdown performance from Joshua Streng with strong play at Quarterback from James Keenan. The defence was led once again by Malik Yusuf and Shane Forsyth.
Peewee
The Bell Warriors Peewee, in the third straight A-Cup appearance by the Warriors, fought hard against the North Gloucester Giants in a battle of the leagues 2 best offensive teams. Neither side giving in completely, the game needed OT to decide the outcome. The Giants prevailed 26 β 20, with Dilan Parry (the MVP of the game) amassing 266 yards rushing in a losing effort.
The Bel-Air Lions and Orleans Bengals squared off for the Pee-Wee Sullivan C-Cup Championship. The Lions prevailed in a 42-0 victory thanks to a balanced effort from both the offence and defence. The Lions opened the game aggressively with a long pass completion to Richard Burton on the game’s first play from scrimmage as Eugene Kanku got all the Lions receivers involved in the passing game while Jean-Paul Cimankinda and Patrick Santos paced a balanced rushing attack. A special mention should also be given to Ian MacLean-Evans for his work in leading the offensive line to a brilliant performance.
Despite a big day from the offence it was the Bel-Air Lions defence that carried the team to the title game in which the unit capped off a tremendous season with a shutout in the championship game. Led by defensive leaders Alex Childs, Devin Styles, and Connor Williams, the Lions defence came up with numerous clutch stops to repeatedly end promising Bengals drives. As strong as the team effort was, there were also individual efforts that prevented what seemed like sure Bengals touchdowns as Kevin Toussaint chased down a Bengals receiver after a long pass completion and Dominic Danso chased down the Bengals quarterback in the Lions redzone.
Bantam
The Myers Riders captured the Lucien Lamoureux trophy for a 13th time by defeating the Bell Warriors by a score of 40-2. Riders’ linebackers Kyrique Fletcher, Joseph Donnelly and Andrew Matthews controlled the Warriors’ running attack, while defensive linemen Matt Giamberardino and Darryl Jean-Baptiste pressured Warriors’ quarterback Tyler Scott throughout the contest. Offensively for the Riders, quarterback Dimitri Morand threw three TD passes to receiver Marco Trunzo, and also connected with receiver Maxime Chainey and fullback Keenan Tanti for single TDs. Running back Joey McKiernan rushed for a long TD for the Riders. As had been the case all season long, Mike Hoecht, Charlie Keenan and Jesse Skucas ran hard for the Warriors. Defensively, Josh Bailey and Mitchell Henselwood led the Warriors throughout the game.
The Cumberland Panthers Bantam team faced their East End rival, the Orleans Bengals for the B Cup Championship Game.Β While the Orleans Bengals threatened to score on a few occasions in the first half big plays by the Panther defense kept the game scoreless at the end of the first half.Β Second half interceptions by Seb Kroon and Zach Charron swung momentum in the Panthers favour. Panther QB Jackson Bennettβs 40 yard scramble set up Tristan Tessierβs two yard touchdown run giving the Pantherβs a 7-0 lead with 6:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.Β Tessier returned the favor four minutes later, as his 17 yard run helped to set up a 1 yard TD run on a QB sneak by Game MVP Jackson Bennett to lock up the 13-0 victory.
Championship Week is one of the major highlights of the year for NCAFA but it does not signify the end of the season.Β All-Star games are scheduled for Sunday November 11th at Keith Harris Stadium (Carleton University) β 12:15 pm Peewee and 2:45 pm Bantam.Β Check out www.ncafa.ca for all the NCAFA action β scores β schedules β standings.
