- We start this week out with sending our condolences to all the players and coaches who’ve been forced to the sidelines due to the Alberta teacher’s strike. School Sport Alberta has set a hard deadline for November 4th, and if the strike continues past this date then the provincial playoffs will be cancelled. Here’s to hoping the Alberta Teachers’ Association can come to an agreement ASAP so we can get teams back on the field in Alberta before we reach the point of no return.

- Now back to our regular scheduled programming, and where do we begin? It was a wild week of action across the country with big-time games and surprising results shaking up the rankings. We’ll first turn our attention to Saskatoon, where Holy Cross jumped into the top ten after getting their revenge with a 23-15 victory against St. Joseph. We know the Crusaders have been dreaming about this matchup since last year’s city final where St. Joseph managed to pull off the upset after dropping both of their regular season games against Holy Cross, and then to rub salt in the wound the Guardians went on to win the 6A Provincial title becoming the first team from Saskatoon to pull it off in 14 years. Barring a wild upset in the playoffs, we expect these two to meet again this year with the ultimate bragging rights on the line.
- Another massive top five headline that rippled across Ontario this past week was Assumption taking over the top spot in the Halton Catholic league with a signature 36-22 win over Corpus Christi. This marks the first time the Longhorns have dropped a regular season game since 2021, and brings an end to their 15 game winning streak with their last loss coming at the hands of Huron Heights at the 2023 OFSAA Festival. The win has catapulted Assumption up the rankings, and they are now firmly in the driver’s seat with just two games left on the schedule against Notre Dame and St. Francis Xavier before it’s do or die time. It’s one thing to pull off an upset in the regular season, but it’s a whole different story when you can do it in the playoffs. We’ll just have to wait and see if there’s a rematch written in the stars in Halton.
- We stay in the GTHA where we’ve had another changing of the guard with Bishop Ryan leaving no loose ends in their 31-7 blowout against Bishop Tonnos. The Celtics are a team that’s been knocking on the door the last few seasons, and it seems like they’ve finally busted through and are now the team to beat in the Hamilton Catholic league. That’s a lot easier said than done, and they have no time to rest on their laurels with another big-time matchup against St. Thomas More on deck this week, who will be well rested coming off a bye week. They also can’t afford to overlook their final regular season matchup against their rivals from Newman, who are currently sitting at 3-1 and will be looking to make a statement against Bishop Tonnos this week.

- We’ve been waiting for the contest between Miller and Campbell in Regina after it was first cancelled back on September 12th, and it didn’t disappoint with Miller coming out on top 38-28 in a high scoring affair over the defending city champs. This leaves Miller undefeated in Regina with their only loss of the year coming against St. Joseph in Saskatoon, and they should be feeling good about their chances to go the distance again after taking a step back last season. On the other sideline, Campbell will be heading back to the drawing board to try and learn how they can limit the Marauders high-powered offence, because there’s a good chance these two will be meeting again when it matters the most – that’s as long they don’t allow Riffel to get in the way.
- Another highly anticipated matchup every year is the clash between W.F. Herman and Holy Names in Windsor, and this edition went down to the wire with Herman holding on for the 21-14 victory to take over first place in WECSSAA. Just like all our other marquee matchups from this week, we’re already anticipating a rematch in the finals if all goes according to plan down the stretch, but Essex might have a different set of plans sitting at 3-1 with their only loss coming against Herman in 14-6 defensive duel, and we’re excited to see how they line-up against Holy Names this week in their regular season finale.

- Let’s take a detour to British Columbia for a minute to discuss what’s turned into the most competitive conference in the nation this season. For years it was Vancouver College and then everyone else, but this season that narrative has been flipped on it’s head with plenty of programs having the horses to go all the way if they can make the right calls at the right times. The two favourites still have to be W.J. Mouat and Lord Tweedsmuir, who both came away with big wins this week with Mouat getting the better of Robert Bateman 21-6, and Tweedsmuir asserting their dominance with a 32-13 victory over Centennial. With that said, we’ve still got nine programs with a 3-0 or 2-1 record as we hit the midway point, and with three games left in the regular season the only thing we are expecting is the unexpected as we race towards the finish line.
- Westdale remain the team to beat in Hamilton Public, but it was too close for comfort in their 21-20 victory over Saltfleet. Good teams always find a way to come out on the right side of the scoreboard, but Saltfleet are beginning to heat up at the perfect time and could be a darkhorse in the playoffs to go all the way if they continue to trend in the right direction.

- Who’s the best team in ROPSSAA? You might as well just throw St. Roch, David Suzuki and Robert F. Hall into a hat and pick your favourite because right now they’re all separated by razor thin margins on the field and in the standings. St. Roch have dropped off the rankings momentarily after losing their second straight against Robert F. Hall, but we really won’t have a great idea about where any of them stand until we can crown a champion and see how they manage once they get out of their three team division.
- We finish off this week with a trip to Nova Scotia, where Charles P. Allen have been putting together a season for the ages. There’s always one or two dominant teams in the league, but what the Cheetahs have been doing so far this year puts them in a different category of elite. Through five games, they have now outscored their opponents 285-20, which means they’re averaging 56 points per game with an average margin of victory of 52 points. Hopefully this isn’t a classic CFC50 jinx where we show some love and then all hell breaks loose, but we had to shine a light on what the Cheetahs have achieved so far even if they haven’t managed to pen the final chapter yet. If they keep up this level of dominance, we will have to do a deep dive into the archives to figure out just how historic this run might be when it’s all said and done.
