2026 CFC50 High School Rankings WEEK 3: Riffel run roughshod over Miller in Regina

TOP HEADLINES

• What just happened in Regina? Entering last week, you would’ve been safe in assuming that Miller and Riffel would be a great matchup, and nobody would’ve thought you were crazy if you predicted the Royals to come out on top. Now, if you had predicted that Riffel would run away with a dominant 52-11 blowout, then there definitely would’ve been some eyebrows raised. But that’s exactly what happened as the Royals drew a clear line in the prairie sands for the rest of the league to strive for. We can’t forget about their 46-7 opening loss at the hands of the reigning provincial champions Holy Cross, but right now the Royals are in the driver seat in Regina, and they’re going to need to keep their foot to the floor especially with a rematch still on the schedule against Miller on October 9th at Mosaic Stadium. That game will be the true indicator of each team’s status heading into the playoffs. For now, the Royals reign supreme.

• One of the best time’s of the year is when Ontario programs schedule their non-conference opponents, which can expose some of the grey area that we simply don’t get to see when league play begins. This week we had a treat of a contest between Nelson and A.N. Myer, who are two of the perennial contenders for OFSAA bids, and are known as the class of their respective leagues. As expected, it was an exciting game with the Lords coming out on top 23-15 to help launch them into the top 20 conversation. More importantly, these types of matchups can also expose some blind spots for each program in a high stakes game that doesn’t have any real implications on their goals at the end of the season, so win or loss it’s always a net positive when you can schedule stiff competition in September.
• Elsewhere we had some more non-conference clashes that shook up the rankings with Western Tech showing up in a big way earning a decisive 48-16 win against St. Joan of Arc, who are coming off an OFSAA Bowl appearance last season. Couple that with their close loss against A.N. Myer, and it looks like the Colts are legitimate contenders in Ontario who could make school history as the first to bring home an OFSAA banner after falling short in their first appearance a year ago. Another marquee non-conference matchup this past week featured London South taking on 2025 OFSAA participant Paul Dwyer. South were able to triumph 18-6, but both teams can take a lot of positives with South getting some much needed reps against a quality opponent before they attempt to run the gauntlet in London, and despite the loss, Paul Dwyer can use this as a measuring stick beyond the LOSSA region that only features four other programs to test themselves against before the Metro Bowl playdowns.

CFC100 CLASS 2027 RANKINGS

• There was another huge clash in Ontario this past week, but this one featured a cross-country battle with Robert Bateman making the trip to the GTA to take on St. Roch. We’re beginning to see more programs venturing outside of their provincial borders with Harry Ainlay pulling off a similar trip earlier in the year to take on Nelson, and Notre Dame (Calgary) heading west to take on Vancouver College. While it helps with the rankings so we can actually compare programs from two different parts of the country, ultimately we believe it’s a great initiative for all programs involved to help grow the high school game in Canada, and also provides lifelong memories plus opens the door to new recruiting pathways which we saw the Timberwolves take full advantage of spending time with the York Lions program while in town. Safe to say it was a very successful venture for Robert Bateman who walked away with a 45-14 victory over the Ravens, and it’s just another sign that their program has yet to find their ceiling in the AAA conference where they look to be legitimate contenders to win it all at BC Place after making the leap from AA last season.
• Things continue to heat up in Alberta with the throne on shaky ground after Notre Dame (Calgary) claimed a huge 25-14 victory over the defending champions Ernest Manning. The win will mean a lot to the returning seniors who suffered through the 31-0 loss in the provincial finals against the Griffins last season, but they’ll also have the perspective that they managed to take down Ernest Manning in the regular season last year, and that game meant nothing when it mattered most in November.  The same principles will apply this week when Salisbury get their opportunity to take a swing at Harry Ainlay. The Sabres took a big step forward last season, but still found themselves on the losing end twice against the Titans. As we reach the third week in September, they’ve shown no reason to doubt they can knockdown the door this time around if they bring their A game from start to finish.

NOMINATE A PLAYER FOR THE 2027 CFC PROSPECT GAME ON TSN TRYOUTS

• The hierarchy is still getting fleshed out in British Columbia as they rip through their lengthy exhibition schedule. This week we have Centennial and Belmont making their way onto the rankings after Centennial took down Kelowna 27-6, and Belmont kept it close against the defending champions Lord Tweedsmuir falling 28-22. Belmont will have another chance to prove they belong in the upper echelon with a big game against G.W. Graham, while Centennial will test themselves against a South Delta squad who are continuing to search for ways to right the ship coming off their first win of the season against Seaquam.
• It looks like parity will be theme again in Quebec this season. After three weeks, you’ve got Saint-Jean-Eudes and Collège Bourget sitting atop the standing at 3-0, and then you’ve got the other six programs all clawing each other’s eye out with 1-2 records. It’s maximum chaos at all times which makes it possibly the best league to cover in Canada, but it also creates a ranking nightmare because you have no idea what to anticipate on a week to week basis. At some point you begin comparing losses rather than the wins, and this week it’s Académie Saint-Louis who deserves some shine after putting a scare into Collège Bourget, who held on for a high scoring 42-35 victory over the Arsenal.
