OVFL: QB Fisher leaving his final mark

In his final year for the varsity Kingston Grenadiers of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), Dylan Fisher hopes to leave his mark on the gridiron as he approaches the next chapter of his gridiron life.

When he’s done with the Grenadiers this summer, the fifth-year quarterback from the Sydenham Eagles of the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletics Association (KASSAA) will be travelling out east to play with the StFX X-Men while studying business administration.

“They have a winning atmosphere out there, and the coaching staff was very inviting,” he said.

At 5’10” and 170 pounds, he won’t be the biggest pivot to ever grace the field.  However, his performance in high school and with the Grenadiers led to his discovery.

Fisher led Grenadiers to the Wettges Conference Championship game in 2014,  The team lost by one touchdown to the Ottawa Myers Riders. He did manage to have an outstanding game with 440 passing yards and four touchdown passes.

In 2015, Fisher hopes to win an OVFL Championship in his final season with the Grenadiers.

So far, the season has been mostly strong for the Kingston squad, but not without its hiccups. As of the third week of play, they are 2-1 with wins at Cumberland and Cornwall.

In the first three games combined, Fisher has 520 passing yards and three touchdown passes.

“The passing game has been a little hit and miss,” Fisher said.  “We’ve had guys running wrong routes.”

“So we’ve had problems in the passing game and the running game at times as well.”

He said the worst game for him was the 8-7 victory over a strong Cumberland team because an absolute grinder in rainy conditions on the road.

He threw for 177 yards in the game but 25 of his 36 passes were incomplete.  Also, he felt pressured throughout the game and gave up five interceptions as a result.

“That was a real greasy game,” he said. “We had a hard time getting our foot in on the ground, and the O-line was having a hard time too getting their feet set in the mud.”

Luckily for Fisher, the game against the Cornwall Wildcats was easier on him.

“The Cornwall game was a lot better – it was nice and sunny,” Fisher commented.  “The o-line did really well, obviously the pass pro was a lot better this week too.”

He said while the team has performed well to this point, there still is something left to be desired, both for himself and the team as a whole.

“We need to bring a full effort with the pass going forward,” said Fisher.  “The run game is hot and cold, so we have a lot of things we need to work on in practice going ahead.”
