Adjusting Gladiator

After week six of regular season the Sudbury Gladiators of the Ontario Football Conference are coming off of their bye with an overall record of 3-2-1.

If the Gladiators can add a couple of more wins to their record during the upcoming weeks the team will qualify for playoffs.

Last season, the junior Gladiators just missed the playoffs finishing fifth overall, and this seasonā€™s varsity run could give the recently adjusted rookies the playoff experience they missed.

Eric Greene, a 5ā€™9ā€ 225 pound offensive left guard, is one of the teamā€™s rookies who have made the adjustment from junior varsity to varsity level.

In his final year at the junior varsity level. Greene played as a defensive tackle and registered 20 tackles and recorded a sack.

Greene had to leave his multi-award winning defensive abilities behind in order to play the unfamiliar position of left guard for the varsity Gladiators, which was the biggest challenge in his adjustment period.

ā€œAnother thing was that everyone got bigger, I was no longer a big player anymore,ā€ added the left guard.

The varsity rookie has coped well the adjustment and has used the challenges to his advantage.

ā€œI watch a lot of football so I have a pretty good understanding of most football positions, also I go to the gym almost everyday so it makes up for my smaller size, ā€œ commented Greene. ā€œThe adjustment was hard, but in the end it motivated me to push myself harder since I didnā€™t have a guaranteed spot anymore.ā€

Greene’s advice for young players going through the adjustment is to not get discouraged by someone bigger than you or not get played right away.

ā€œā€¦[G]o out and try no matter what and in time itā€™ll work out,” offered Greene.
