Bantam Lions win nailbiter against Spears

Coming down to the very last play, the Niagara Spears were one yard shy of tying the game at 28, when the Lions defense stood tall, to blow the final whistle, on what could have been an exceptional comeback.

It was simply one of those games, the lead never extended further than 14 points for either team, the defenses came up big more often than anyone could ask.

The Lions got on the board on the first drive, with a solid, time-consuming drive, where they were able to ware out the Spears defense. Following the failed extra point attempt, the Lions lead 6-0 before the Spears woke up and rallied for two consecutive scores.

With the Spears leading 14-6 at halftime, turnovers were the storyline, with neither team able to protect the ball or take advantage of their opportunities.

Then out came the pride of the Lions to start the third quarter, with one quick score before the defense was able to stand tall. Then, the following drive, the Lions offense marched their way down the field giving way to Jordan Brubacher who broke off a 34 yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 21-14, with the successful two-point conversion.

With the Lions eventually leading 28-14, the Spears rallied to come within seven points, with just 53 seconds on the clock, they relied on their defense to get them the ball back and they did just that. Unfortunately, the Spears could not do much more with it as the Lions defense make a remarkable stand.

It came down to the very last play, just 4.9 seconds left on the clock, down 28-21 when Niagara QB Connor Cropper, completed a pass to the one yard line. The Lions defense swarmed the receiver and he got no further.

The Cambridge Lions hope to keep this momentum going their way, as they improved to 2-2 on the season and are now riding a two game winning streak into Villanova High School to take on the Essex Ravens.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
