OVFL: Junior varsity Grenadiers lose battle against Warriors

It was a quiet day on the Grenadiers bleachers as the lone sideline chanter couldn’t help the home team capture the victory.

The junior varsity Limestone District Grenadiers fell victim to the Mississauga Warriors in the Ontario Varsity Football League yesterday at Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute. The Warrios defeated the Grenadiers 28-8. 

A slow start for the Grenadiers resulted in another tough loss as the team falls to 1-5 (sixth place, 12th overall). At halftime, the Grenadiers trailed 14-1.  The Grenadiers only tally came at the end of the first half  – a single by Cameron Hebert after a missed field goal attempt on the final play.

Running back Caleb Goodfellow was the main offensive threat for the Grenadiers. Goodfellow carried the ball twelve times for 70 yards. However,  Nick Westendorp scored the only touchdown for the Grenadiers – a 16-yard pass from Brendan Steele midway through the fourth quarter.

Defensive back Harry Robinson continued to be a threat for the Grenadiers.  Robinson registered ten tackles against the Warriors. Hebert had six tackles and two combined quarterback sacks.

Quarterback Tanner DeJong started the day but was relieved by Steele after only completing two passes in eleven attempts and throwing an interception.  Steele finished the game with 14 completions in 25 attempts for 139 passing yards, and also threw an interception.

All three Grenadier teams are back on the gridiron next weekend.   The junior varsity Grenadiers will host the Niagara Spears while the bantam and varsity teams will mmeet the Metro Toronto Spears.

11:00 am – Bantam Grandiers (4-1) – Metro Toronto Wildcats (2-3)
1:00 pm – Junior Grenadiers (1-5) – Niagara Spears (3-2)
4:00 pm – Varsity Grenadiers (5-0) – Metro Toronto Wildcats (2-3)
