Central Alberta Buccaneers, 47-7, The Bucs Stumble against the Monarchs

by: Todd Lewis

On Saturday, June 24th, the Central Alberta Buccaneers kicked off against the Fort McMurray Monarchs. The Bucs lost the 2016 AFL Championship to the Monarchs and the pirate crew was eager to step onto the field against them. Based on the seasons’s standings, the Bucs knew they were in for an uphill-battle.

“The Monarchs are the best semi-pro team in the country,” said longtime Buc veteran, Tylor Johannesson. All of their starting players “played at least junior football (Huskies, Colts, etc). They have ex-CFL players and award-winning university players.”
The Buccaneer defense was feisty as per usual. While the Monarchs did break for the occasional big play, the pirate D was able to stay disciplined and motivated. Their do-or-die attitude was crucial against the Monarchs as they “had to deal with a CFL-caliber runningback and a Texas University QB,” explained Johannesson. Unfortunately, the Buc defense saw a ton of field time as the the team’s offense struggled to find any consistency. “We were rarely off the field and it was a hot day. It wasn’t easy, but we kept it close for the most part.” The Monarchs tagged on a couple late touchdowns late in the fourth (utilizing one of their timeouts with two seconds remaining) to widen the scoring margin. The Bucs record is 2-2 with their 47-7 loss to the Monarchs.
The Bucs get to enjoy another bye week over the long weekend. With two weeks before their next game (which is against the 2017 expansion-team, the Parkland Predators), the Bucs have a chance to heal up, solidify their schemes and plays, and prepare for the second half of the season. “It’s time to get to work, spend time in the film room, and show up to practice.”
