Calgary and Area Midget (Week 3) : Falcons Flying High

Week 3 Results

Falcons vs. Broncos

Result: Falcons 41 – Broncos 18

The Calgary Falcons offence continued to show off it’s strengths in this game. QB Chris Merchant was forced to sit out the first half of play for reasons unknown but when he returned for the second half the Falcons got back to the way things have been this season.

Merchant threw for three touchdowns and ran one in himself in just one half of play. WR Nolan O’Reilly and WR Aaron Gruending each had two touchdown catches on the night for the Falcons. RB Alex Cho had another 200 yard rushing game. The bright side for the Broncos had to be special teams play, which was led by solid kicking from Romario Leiva.

Northern Raiders vs. Stampeders

Result: Northern Raiders 0 – Stampeders 57

The Stampeders continued to be led by the play of QB Dante Djan and RB Justin Keys. Djan had his best performance of the season so far, throwing for four touchdowns and running for one of his own. Keys caught one of Djan’s touchdown passes as well as running one in along the ground. The Stampeders defence played well shutting out the still scoreless Raiders.

Wildcats vs. Hilltoppers

Result: Wildcats 4 – Hilltoppers 24

This was a closer game then the score shows. Up until the fourth quarter the game was a defensive struggle, in which the Wildcats defence played admirably led by the play of DB Ryan Baker. For the Hilltoppers RB Tyler Chow came up big with two touchdowns. WR Spencer Janke had a big game as well. He had one touchdown reception, as well as recovering his own punt in the forth quarter. That punt recovery was the turning point for the Hilltoppers who took control and were able to pull away in the end.

Colts vs. Cowboys

Result: Colts 7 – Cowboys 17

The Cowboys were once again led by the solid play of their defence. MLB Jakub Jakubek had a very solid game, making multiple tackles and recording one interception which he took back for a TD. The rest of the defence contributed in big ways as well, creating multiple turnovers including a fumble recovery in the end zone. The Colts played well defensively as well creating three turnovers through the air. MLB Cole Van Esch intercepted two passes on his own. WR Austin Hartley caught a late touchdown to continue his strong performance this season, however it was too little too late.

Bulldogs vs. Mavericks

Result: Bulldogs 2 – Mavericks 14

The Bulldogs defence kept this game close, but in the end the Mavericks were able to seal the victory. Both of the Mavericks touchdowns were scored by WR AJ Statz on long receptions. The Mavericks defence also played well led by DL Patrick Apuzzo who had two fumble recoveries.

Fire vs. Lions

Result: Fire 40 – Lions 13

The Prairie Fire have continued to turn around their season with another lopsided victory. In the victory they were led by QB Scott Pearson and his three touchdown passes. On defence the Fire were led by the play of DL Bryce Fisher and the rest of the defensive line. Fisher contributed two sacks in the game. Lions RB Ryder Stone played out of a different offensive package in this game, mostly playing in the slot, but still contributed one long touchdown reception.

All of the winners of the games this week looked strong. The Mavericks, Hilltoppers and Cowboys all continued their strong play and pulled out important victories. The Stampeders and Fire both showed that they can be offensively dominant. But the real story has to be the high flying Falcons. The Falcons offence showed that they can rack up the points and they remain undefeated.

Key Match-Ups Next Week:

Friday- Cowboys vs. Hilltoppers: Two of the powerhouses face off… who will come out on top?
