Calgary Spring League Game of the Week: Will Prairie Fire overcome Cowboy hurdle?

On Thursday night, the Calgary Area Midget Football Association (CAMFA) is set to kickoff at Encana Field.

The Calgary Cowboys will open the season against Red Deer Prairie Fire at 7:15pm.

Dubbed as the CAMFA Game of the Week, this is a marquee matchup as both teams come into this season as serious contenders for the Tier 1 Championship.

The Prairie Fire would like to eradicate the memory of losing their final regular season game at the hands of the Cowboys by a single point (15-14).Β  This victory allowed the Cowboys to finish in top spot in their division.

Moreover, the Prairie Fire would like to overcome a hurdle since joining the league. They would like to get their first ever victory against the Cowboys.

However, the Cowboys defensive unit could thwart that plan as most of their starters will return from last year including CAMFA All-Star linebackers Joe Dutton, Cameron St-Amand as well as four defensive linemen and secondary standout Jacob Geremiah.

Equally, the Cowboys offense will also be a force to be reckoned with as tailback Austin Daisy as well as linemen Michael Palumbo and Ben Fortini will be the leaders of this unit.

As for the Prairie Fire, their strength lies in their coaching staff as well as the team’s size. Furthermore, their secondary, quarterback and tailback depth will be something the Cowboys have to find an answer to if they hope to pull out the win.

With the Prairie Fire hungry and the Cowboys motivated, this has the makings of an intriguing, yet exciting start to the CAMFA season as uit could become the precursor of what lies ahead.
