The junior varsity Cumberland Panthers are undefeated. But they needed a thrilling performance last weekend to stay that way.
The Panthers gutted out a wild 56-49 win over the Scarborough Thunder.
The Panthers defense was bombarded in the the game. With Toronto quarterback Connor Smith throwing for a ridiculous 515 yards and six touchdowns.
βWe’ve got to find a way to cut down on penalties if we want to keep winning games,β said junior varsity Head Coach Warren Steeves.
Steeves said penalties can be avoided by making smarter decisions on defense.
This upcoming weekend, the junior varsityΒ Cumberland PanthersΒ will play a tough Pickering Dolphins team (3-2) on the road.
Meanwhile the varsity Cumberland Panthers lost in heartbreaking fashion last weekend to the Toronto Thunder, 8-7 in overtime.
βWe have to learn how to finish,β said varsity Panthers Head Coach Ron Raymond.
Raymond cited breakdowns on special teams and offense that cost his team the victory.
βWe have to be more consistent on offense and overcome mental barriers.β
For this weekend’s matchup against the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins, Raymond notes the importance of getting by the Dolphins’ strong athletes on defense.
βTailback Jacob Malinsky has really stepped up for us,β said Raymond. “We have to make sure we have a balanced offense.β
The varsity Panthers are 2-3 on the season.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
