CFC25 Small School RANKINGS: Dalbe-Viau refuse to relinquish the throne in Quebec

TOP HEADLINES

  • We were hoping for an epic showdown to cap off the year in Quebec, but Dalbe-Viau weren’t interested in any theatrics putting together a dominant 49-14 performance against St-Jean-Vianney to bring home their second straight DII Bol d’Or, and their third in four years. From start to finish Dalbe-Viau couldn’t be stopped finishing with a flawless 11-0 record, which extends their winning streaking to 16 straight going back to last season. Now the question has to be raised if they will be the next program that takes the leap to DI, which we recently saw with College Bourget, who haven’t missed a beat making two appearances in the DI Bol d’Or in their first three years. Regardless of where they play next year, Dalbe-Viau have proven once again they are one of the best run programs in Canada, and are more than worthy of their number one status on the CFC25 Small School Rankings.

  • It was the battle of the best everyone has been anticipating in WECSSAA Tier II this season, and it didn’t disappoint with Belle River coming out on top 29-22 against North Star in a thrilling championship game. It’s the first championship since 2022 when the Nobles shocked the region by taking home the Tier I title in 2022, and they now have another chance to compete for more hardware in the inaugural OFSAA AA Bowl series against St. Mary’s out of Hamilton on Friday.
  • We’re down to the final four in the Alberta Tier II playdowns, and once again Austin O’Brien have found a way to book their ticket to the semis after entering the bracket as the 10th seed with a 2-4 record prior to the teacher’s strike. For context, Austin O’Brien compete in the same division as CFC50 top ranked Harry Ainlay in Edmonton, which makes it tough to really tell where they stand in the pecking order until later in the season, but they usually show up when it matters most and won the Tier II title in 2023. They were tasked with a match-up against the 4th seed St. Joseph, and on paper this looked like it should’ve been a fantastic game with St. Joseph narrowly edging them out 25-19 in the preseason, plus they had a barnburner last year in the quarterfinals that finished 41-36 also in favour of the Celtics. But this time around was a very different story with the Crusaders cruising to a 43-16 victory, and now they’ll have a chance to compete for another Tier II title if they can find a way past Hunting Hills, who also found little resistance in their 33-9 win against Cold Lake. On the other side of the bracket, Cochrane were able to come out on topΒ  26-23 against Catholic Central in a nailbiter to keep their undefeated record alive, and will now be facing the defending Tier II champions Holy Trinity Academy, who ran away with a 49-28 victory against Bishop Carroll. This match-up should be a great one with both teams having a legacy of getting the job done at the provincial level with Holy Trinity Academy appearing in five of the last seven Tier II finals, and Cochrane appearing in 11 Tier II/III finals in the last 12 years.

CFC100 CLASS 2026 RANKINGS

  • Our final stop of the week is in British Columbia, where we had another upset courtesy of South Kamloops, who found themselves on the right side of a 49-41 track meet against John Barsby to secure their spot in the semifinals. They’ll now be looking to repeat the same script in a showdown against Argyle at BC Place, who made their intentions clear by blasting Ballenas 41-14 in their quarterfinals contest. Neither of these teams have ever made it to the AA finals, so pressure will be at an all-time high with history on the line for both schools. On the other side of the bracket, the lower seed also prevailed with Mount Douglas pitching a 21-0 shutout against Holy Cross, and they’ve now booked a date with the defending champions Vernon in the semifinals, who had no issues in the quarterfinals defeating Nechako Valley 41-0. Vernon have appeared in five of the last seven AA finals winning three banners, while Mt. Douglas haven’t made a championship appearance since 2018 when they were still competing in the AAA conference.
