CFC25 Small School Rankings (WEEK 10): Two top five programs stumble in the final stages

We’ve almost hit the end of the road this season, but of course we have a few more hairpins to navigate before settling the final rankings.

It was a massive week in Alberta football with provincial titles on the line across multiple divisions, but we had our eyes glued to the Tier II and Tier III championships. The first matchup saw top ranked St. Joseph’s put their crown on the line one last time against Holy Trinity Academy, but they wouldn’t relinquish the throne holding on for a 35-19 victory. This is the first provincial title for the Celtics since 2014, who were about as close to flawless on a football field as possible this year outscoring their opponents 639-134, and no team was able to come within 21 points of victory. With numbers like that, they are truly worthy of their number one ranking after a fantastic season.

We now head to the Tier III final, which saw another instalment of Holy Rosary versus Cochrane in a long running battle that’s seen them meet six straight times in the provincial finals. Holy Rosary were hoping this was finally the year of the Raider, but the Cobras were able to snatch a 15-7 victory and a record extending seventh straight Tier III title – the most consecutive titles for any team in Alberta history. The score tells you how close these two teams matched on paper, and we wouldn’t be shocked if we get the seventh edition next season as Holy Rosary continue to search for the final answer.

Next up we travel to British Columbia where the provincial semifinals provided a shocking result with Carson Graham finding a way to knock off previously top five ranked Langley by a score of 24-22. Considering the last time these two met in the regular season, it was a totally different plot with the Thunderbirds flying away with a 50-6 victory on the road, it’s safe to say nobody saw this result coming, just like nobody saw the Vancouver College upset coming at the AAA level. It’s been a crazy year across the country, and we are finally ready to cap it off with two championship matchups in B.C. between Carson Graham and Robert Bateman in AA Coastal Finals at B.C. Place, while Vernon prepare to take on their AAA counterparts from Kelowna in the AA/AAA Hybrid Championship at Greater Vernon Athletic Park.

Lastly we’ve got some OFSAA news to report as Centennial couldn’t find a way to hang with CFC50 Frontenac falling 37-7 in the Eastern Bowl. It’s always a tough road when the COSSA region travels to the festival, but the Chargers deserve credit for a fantastic season including their COSSA finals victory over Holy Cross, who last represented the region at OFSAA in 2019. It was the second time Centennial have ever appeared in an OFSAA Bowl with their last appearance coming in the National Capital Bowl in 2000.

Who’s getting ranked?

For the first time, Canadafootballchat.com (CFC) is pleased to bring you the national ‘Small School’ high school football rankings known as the CFC25.

The CFC25 rankings considers all conference and non-conference games (in Canada and the United States) while scrimmages are not evaluated (there is no such thing as an exhibition game – those are classified as non-conference games) and forfeit* wins are not considered towards overall record.

How is the CFC25 evaluated?

Leagues/teams included in rankings:

  • British Columbia: AA Varsity
  • Alberta: Tier 2-4
  • Saskatchewan: 12-man 3A rural, Saskatoon  – 5A, Regina – Stewart
  • Manitoba: Division 2 and 3 Varsity
  • Ontario: NSSAA – Haldimand-Norfolk, BAA – Bluewater, COSSAA – Kawartha, COSSAA – Bay of Quinte, LRFL – Lanark-Renfrew, LGSSAA – Brockville, EOFC – Cornwall
  • Quebec: Juvenile Division 1b
  • New Brunswick: 12-man D2E and D2W
  • Nova Scotia: Div. 2 Nova – Sydney Academy, Horton, Millwood, Avon View, Cole Harbour. Scotia – Sackville, Park View, J.L. Ilsley, Central Kings, West Kings (***NS league was re-aligned Oct. 1, 2019. These are now the Division 2 teams and will take into affect for week 7 ranking)

The CFC25 is a RELATIVE RANKING that considers small school leagues from all eight high school playing provinces (minimum one team represented from each province) and the strength of the league. Additional criteria used to determine the relative ranking are the ability to accomplish winning a championship, the impact players and performers on that team (ie. CFC100s, CDN All-Stars etc.), and a team’s coaching and recent tradition.

The CFC Scouting Bureau consists of CFC Reporters, CFC Scouts, and selected local reporters and scouts who submit local ranking results on a weekly basis. The CFC25 is released every Tuesday (other than on Holidays) at 12 noon.
