CFC25 Small School Rankings WEEK 6: Top programs beginning to separate themselves from the pack

If we’ve learned anything the past two weeks, no coach can expect an easy victory when they schedule a CFC25 Small School program.

*Editors Note: Chinook has been removed from the CFC25 Rankings until further action is decided by the Lethbridge School Division about the future of their football program after a hazing incident led to four student-athletes being charged with sexual assault with a weapon, assault with a weapon, and unlawful confinement.*

HEADLINES

Saskatchewan

  • It looks like the battle for the South Rural League title is going to come down to Weyburn and Central after the Eagles had no issues dispatching Yorkton by a score of 38-14. We could still see some life out of Yorkton in their season finale against Central, but it’s going to be tough to flip the scoreboard from earlier in the year when the Cyclones ran away with the 26-0 shutout on the road.
  • Greenall were handed a tough task this week with a contest against Miller, who’re the number one ranked team on CFC50 Rankings, and it ended in predictable fashion with the Marauders cruising to a 51-17 victory. It’s a tough pill to swallow right before the playoffs begin, but the Griffins now know what the taste of defeat feels like, and should be able to take away a lot of the positives from playing an elite opponent and turn it into fuel for another run at the Stewart Division title.

Quebec

  • We’ve been waiting to see how Estacades would stack up against Saint-Joseph, but they couldn’t find that extra gear with the Vert et Or claiming an easy 30-7 victory. The Aigles should still secure the second seed in the Eastern Conference, and will have a couple weeks to study the film to figure out what the missing ingredient might be heading into the playoffs. This loss also boosts College Laval’s stock in the rankings, who despite having three losses has been the only program to battle Dalbe-Viau and Saint-Joseph on even footing this season.

Alberta

  • It was a special week for Holy Trinity Academy, who once again proved their one of the best programs in Alberta by demolishing Notre Dame 36-0. It wasn’t too long ago that a victory over Notre Dame would’ve be unfathomable for any team not named St. Francis or Harry Ainlay, but the Knights have shown that size doesn’t matter if you’re able to build a winning culture from top to bottom that players can buy into on a weekly basis.
  • We probably should’ve given Strathmore some respect earlier in the year, but it’s better late than never with the Spartans still sporting an undefeated 6-0 record as we race towards the Provincial Playdowns. It’s going to be interesting to see how they match-up against Holy Trinity Academy in their regular season finale, especially with two weeks for each program to dissect their opponent and put together the perfect game plan.

British Columbia

  • We didn’t know how Holy Cross would handle the pressure facing an undefeated Windsor squad on the road, but the Crusaders never flinched walking away with a 28-13 victory. That was their first real hurdle of the regular season, but the road doesn’t get any easier with a pair of matchups against Langley and Robert Bateman to round off their regular season campaign.

Ontario

  • We’ve got another new entry from Ontario this week with the L’Essor Eagles staking their claim as one of the best small schools in Canada. They currently sit atop the WECSSAA Tier II standings with a 4-0 record outscoring their opponents 100-24 in the process. They’ll be looking ahead to big matchups with Riverside and North Star at the end of the season, who’re the only other two undefeated clubs left in the nine team league.
