CFC27 Update (2): Western cracks the top 5

The final push for this year’s U Sports recruiting season is in full swing. All U Sports teams are fully up to date with today’s update of the CFC27 U Sports Recruiting Rankings.

Nothing has changed in the top spot with the Calgary Dinos firmly establishing themselves with what might be the best recruiting class ever assembled at the University of Calgary. It is virtually impossible at this point in the recruiting cycle, to actually catch the Dinos.

Aside from no change at the top, we now see that Western has pushed their way into the top 5. Western has an outstanding class and recently added a couple of solid prospects, not necessarily headliners or CFC100s, but good players from winning programs.

McMaster moved into the last spot at number 5 and has slowly assembled a solid class and, to date, have 35 commits which include 2 CFC100s. This hard work has paid off as the Marauders moved ahead of the Vanier champions, the Rouge et Or for the ‘total rankings’.

The other two teams that stayed in the top 5 of the ‘total rankings’ was the UBC Thunderbirds who started slow, but have really heated up these past couple weeks as they signed two outstanding defensive end prospects and CFC100s.

Montreal has held firm in the top 5, as they always do. The Carabins are a hotbed for incredible football prospects. Year in and year out, they take advantage of their geographic location, championship program, and one of the more successful coaches in the county led by the only coach in the country who has won a Vanier Cup and a Grey Cup.

Although most people focus in on the total rankings, it’s extremely important to take note of the average-per-player ranking. This ranking is just as important as it demonstrates the quality of player in the recruiting class. Everybody will have their own opinion of recruits, however, the scouting bureau does an outstanding job of actually ranking these prospects and giving them the points that equate to their potential and talent.

If a U Sport team signs 42 lower end players, aside from moving up the ‘total rankings’, are they really getting better? How many years in a row does a team have to bring in 40+players before recruits start to realize that they are a) over recruiting, or b) have significant retention issues at that school?

For the rest of the list, StFX and SMU continue to climb as they have added a number of recruits at both schools.

*CFC employs a point system based on the recruits declared in the recruiting class on CFC:

  • Schools declare recruits at different times of year (i.e. Quebec schools recruit most in January, higher academic school entries are later, etc) so make sure you equate the amount of recruits with the point system
  • Players are rated based on (a) CFC100 ranking (b) 4-star ranking (c) 3-star ranking (d) all other players get a NR
  • Transfers are NOT allocated points as of 2016-2017 as they would have acquired points in their original class year. They will be listed on the ‘Transfer List’.
  • CFC27 is updated once per week
