#CFC50 game preview (AB): No. 15 Harry Ainlay Titans’ face Austin O’Brien for provincial’s ranking

With the high school football campaign midway through the season, the top teams are beginning to separate themselves from the pack as each team prepares for the home stretch. The #CFC50 No. 15 Harry Ainlay Titans as well as the #CFC50 No. 3 Bev Facey Falcons, are the last two remaining undefeated teams, while the upstart Austin O’Brien Crusaders trail behind in the third position having only one game in the loss column. This Friday, a matchup of two of the top three teams will take place as the Crusaders look to dethrone the Titans and potentially take over as the leading team, barring the outcome of the Bev Facey Falcon’s game.

By no means will this be an easy task. The Titans, led by Cody Olsen, Jonathan Rosery, and recent University of Alberta Golden Bears commit #CFC100 LBΒ Tadi Siwari, boast the highest scoring offense in the Carr Division while also allowing the second fewest points behind Bev Facey. Nevertheless, coach Darcey Ogonoski thinks his team has what it takes to compete against the top teams in the division.

β€œUp to this point of the season, I think our team has made strides towards becoming competitive when entering the Provincial quarterfinals. Last week’s win over Paul Kane was like a playoff game as it determined who the higher seed is going into provincial playoffs.”

Heading into this game, the Crusaders will look for some spark from some of their veteran playmakers to make a splash and potentially alter the momentum of the game. Fans, as well as the Titans must watch out for a fierce run game orchestrated by Brett Yost and Colton Menoryk, as well as impressive receiving showing out of Travis Heggart.

As the third-ranked team in the difficult Carr division, the Crusaders have established themselves as true contenders. The Crusaders have improved upon their 2015 record of 2-6 and control their own destiny, heading int the latter part of the season. The important objective now for this team is to maintain focus and continue to correctly execute the mundane drills, plays, etc., to the players fullest extent. Coach Darcy Ogoniski emphasized the importance of remaining disciplined in this game.

β€œAs for preparing for this week’s game we continue to focus on improving as individuals and as a team while doing our prep for HA. Practice has been productive this week and we are going into the game as healthy as one can expect at this point in the season.”

“To stop a fly offense everyone on defense has to focus on their job and trust their teammates. Offensively we have to recognize the different defensive fronts they use and adjust accordingly. When it is all said and done it will come down to the basics of blocking and tackling as both teams will be well prepped for each other.”

Game time is Friday the 7th, 7:30pm at Clarke Stadium.
