HAMILTON β On Sunday, the Grade 8s took to the field in a Team East vs. Team Halton-Peel matchup that saw Shawn Lukusa, Julian Decarufel and Mitchell Price named the gameβs MVPs.
Lukusa, who wore #20 in white, couldnβt believe that he was named the overall MVP. βI was really shocked and surprised because at the start of the game I didnβt play my A game and then Coach Jeff, the head coach, put me on offense and I really went off,β he said.
βMy highlight was when I scored my first touchdown. I was really happy.β
Jeff Koradi, the head coach of Team East, had nothing but praise for Lukusa. βHe is a tremendous athlete and football player. Heβs a great kid and thatβs a no brainer from everyoneβs perspective,β he said.
The head coach of Team Halton-Peel, JD Ouellette, also felt that Lukusa was a good pick.
The gameβs offensive performer of the game when to #92, Decarufel. The young running back was quick to point out the award was only won because of his team. βItβs amazing, so crazy. Itβs unbelievable,β he said. βIt is teamwork, not just mine, but of the teamβs. Itβs so cool.β
When asked about the highlight of the game, he said, βThe run where I started with the run and I pushed through many players.β
Ouelletteβs defense was set with the task of stopping Decarufel. βHe was really hard to bring down. He had to be gang-tackled,β Ouellette said. βHe ran very powerfully and I think he was chewing up a lot of yards for them [Team East]. Definitely a strong offensive player.β
Koradi said that, βDecarufel is a great kid. He banged it up there hard and just pounded and pounded and pounded. Heβs a really good football player.β
Price, who wore #95 black, couldnβt believe he was named defensive MVP. βI was pretty shocked because everyone on my team played really well and anyone could have got it. Itβs well deserved,β he said. βSome of the tackles for losses, getting passed the line [were the highlights].β
Koradi was impressed with the play of Team Halton-Peelβs defensive tackle. βHe is a good player. He brought it all day and he was disruptive and thatβs how he gets noticed playing defensive line is when youβre disruptive and we have to try to get away from him. Heβs a good football player.β
Ouellette echoed Koradiβs sentiments, having said that Price βis a stud. He was all over the field. Guyβs a great athlete.β
He added that, βThe committee picked excellent players.β
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
