#CFCOVFL PLAYOFF PREVIEW: JV Lions hope to keep things rolling

The junior varsity Cambridge Lions are looking to keep things rolling into the wildcard round of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) playoffs after manhandling the Sault Ste Marie Sabercats 58-6 last week.

The Lions now face the Mississauga Warriors this weekend in the first round of postseason play.

The Lions are 6-2, and their potent offence is a major reason for that, outscoring their opponents 272-113. Running back Elvis Sanchez has led the way, scoring 13 touchdowns and rushing for 922 total yards (average of 7.8 yards per carry).

Their defence has been stellar as well, led by superstar linebacker Jack Hinsperger.

Lions’ Head Coach Gary Skalos said the team is coming together at the right time.

“Everybody’s playing at a high level now,” said Skalos. “We’ve gotten better as the season’s gone on.”

“We’re all pretty comfortable where we’re at, and what we’re doing.”

The Lions will try to stop the Warriors’ passing game, as they’re predominantly a throwing football team. But there isn’t one particular offensive player on the opposing team that the Lions will focus on, it’s more so their offence as a whole.

“It’s more of a team thing,” said Skalos. “We look at what their scheme is and we go after that, as opposed to any individual player.”

The junior varsity Cambridge Lions host the Mississauga Warriors at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at Jacob Hespeler Field.
