#CFCOVFL PREVIEW: JV Spears’ undefeated streak on the line

In Week 4 of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), the junior varsity Niagara Spears head to the TD Waterhouse Stadium to play the London Mustangs.

The JV Spears (2-0) look to stay undefeated against the Adam Conference leading Mustangs (3-0), but know it will be a challenge.

Niagara Spears coach Simon Gichard understands the challenge his team will face in week 4.

“This will be a good test for the boys, they know they need to be focused and consistent for four quarters,” said Gichard.

The JV Spears started their season with a 37-18 win against the Essex Ravens.  After a bye in Week 2, the Spears kept their undefeated record intact with a 29-14 win against the Brampton Bulldogs.

The difference maker has been the Spears running game, as six different players carried the ball for 583 yards. Max Nazartchyk and OPC participant Cole Burniston leads the Spears running game, picking up six touchdowns between the two of them.

The Spears defence has been led by Jack Scordino and Jake Porter the defence has 5 interceptions and 9 sacks in their first two wins.

If the Spears want to remain undefeated, they need to improve their passing game. In the first two games of the season, the Spears quarterbacks threw three interceptions and completed only 3 passes in 11 attempts.

This weekend, the Spears will have to find an answer for Jr Mustangs Daniel Valente who has 22 assisted tackles, 13 solo tackles and 2 interceptions for touchdowns.

The duel between the two teams is set on Saturday June 13th at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London. Kickoff is 5:30pm.
