The Vanier College Football Cheetahs won their seventh Bol d’Or on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, defeating the Vieux-Montréal Spartiates 31-28.
With our record-breaking quarterback Jérémi Roch injured in the semifinals VS the Lennoxville Cougars, Benoit Lacasse was thrown into a pressure situation to which he responded magnificently. He won the player-of-the-game award, throwing for 277 total yards and 4 touchdowns. |
The Cheetahs jumped ahead early in the game thanks to a 57-yard TD toss by QB Benoit Lacasse to a familiar target, record-breaking receiver Matthew Norzil. Minutes later, a second TD catch by Norzil, a 26-yarder, further increased the Cheetahs’ advantage.
| Later in the first half, Alexandre Piché caught a 59-yard pass for his second TD of the game, and at the end of thirty minutes, the Cheetahs held a formidable 28-13 lead. In the third quarter, the Cheetahs added another 3 points thanks to a field goal from the sure foot of kicker Josh MacDuffie, thus extending our lead to 31-13. However, the Spartiates gamely fought back throughout the 4th quarter, scoring two touchdowns to come within 4 points. In the end, it proved to be “too little, too late” as time ran out on them and the Cheetahs held on for the hard-fought 31-28 championship victory. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff for a terrific season. A special mention has to go out to some of our graduating players, specifically our tremendous record-breaking quarterback Jérémi Roch who lead the team to a 9-1 record during the regular season as well as to Matthew Norzil who also broke records with his exploits this year as a pass receiver. Also not to be forgotten is all-star Byron Archambault, who was the rock of Vanier’s formidable defensive corps. With a tremendous Bol d’Or performance as delivered by quarterback Benoit Lacasse, Coach Chryssomalis must feel secure in the team’s future for that pivotal position.
