Costly last minute drive

OFC JV: Guelph Bears come up short

Week 2 saw the Junior Varsity Bears up against the Sarnia Sturgeon. After a hard fought four quarters, the Sturgeon walked away with a 21-15 victory. The Bears improved drastically from their performance from the previous week, proving they have what it takes to be a competitive team in the OFC this season.

A close game provided the Bears a fighting chance to overtake the Sturgeon. With plenty of opportunities to score in the last few seconds, the Bears were stopped by a strong Sturgeon defense.  A last minute drive was the deciding factor in this game.

The Bears made some crucial changes in last week’s practice. They corrected some major mistakes made in week 1 and stuck to their game plan. The Bears defense stood tall against the Sarnia team only allowing 21 points in comparison to the 73 points surrendered a week earlier.

Offensively, the team produced some much needed points. Keith Bray and Nick Mckellar both had touchdown receptions for the Bears, helping the team stay within six points. Late in the game, the Bears scored a much needed touchdown to bring the score within one. Looking to make a late fourth quarter comeback, the Bears drove the field, but were unsuccessful. Running back Aaron Keough had 100 yards rushing on the day helping the Bears drive the field and gain much needed field position. His stellar play was the spark the team needed to play competitive football for all four quarters.

Head coach Chas Douglas is very happy with his team’s performance in week two and knows with more discipline and fundamentals, the team will come away with that first win of the season.

Next week, the Bears will host the Chatham-Kent Cougars at the University of Guelph.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
