Epic flop

OVFL: Halton Cowboys get trounced in first game of the season at the hands of the defending champions, London Mustangs.

To begin the 2013 season the revamped Cowboys were set out to prove the doubters wrong in a rematch of last year’s regular season finale with the London Mustangs. In Halton’s final game last year they were obliterated 72-0 by a Mustangs team that went on to win the OVFL championship and sent over 20 players to play at the CIS level.

The Cowboys were unable to score any points in the first half, a consistent problem they have had the past few seasons. London’s offense had little trouble in the first half, capitalizing on many missed tackles by the Cowboys defense. The Mustangs quarterback, Cameron Geedes was able to toss twoΒ touchdowns in the opening half, giving the Mustangs a substantial lead.

At the end of the first half, the score was in the Mustangs favour, 29-0.

In the second half, the Cowboys looked more like the team that was being hyped in the off-season. Their defense was able to significantly slow down the Mustangs and only allowed them to scoreΒ seven points. The Cowboys offense also came to life in the second half and was able to move the ball down the field, eventually leading to a score by Cowboys running back, Tristan Williams.

Fundamental blunders were the downfall for the Cowboys in their opening season loss.

β€œWe missed a lot of tackles in the game so we will be focusing our energy on fundamentals this week,” saidΒ Cowboys Head Coach Jon Kronemeyer.

The Cowboys were also victim to an 82-yard kick return for a touchdown.

β€œSpecial teams will also be a key focus for us to improve,” said Kronemeyer.

The game ended with the score 42-7 for the Mustangs; however, play in the second half was much closer and not indicative of the final score.

β€œAll in all I feel if we played the first half of the game like we did in the second, it may have been a different game,” said Kronemeyer.

The Cowboys are away next Saturday to play a game against the winless, Etobicoke Eagles. Catch the game at Etobicoke Collegiate – game time is at 4pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
