Extending perfection

OVFL:  Varsity Grenadiers extend perfect record

For the first time this season, the varsity Limestone District Grenadiers’ defense allowed a touchdown when they traveled to Ottawa to play the Cumberland Panthers in week five Ontario Varsity Football League action against the Cumberland Panthers.

While the Grenadiers did not have any major scoring opportunities, the team still left Ottawa with they victory, extending their perfect season.

In the second quarter, the Grenadiers held on to a 6-0 lead after kicker Michael Bashall was successful on 31 and 35-yard field goal attempts. Prior to halftime, the Panthers found themselves inside the Grenadiers red-zone when Cumberland’s Devin Brazeau ran in for a touchdown – the first touchdown score against the Grenadiers defense.

During the second half, the Grenadiers defense exploded with energy, vowing to bring home the victory. They didn’t once allow the Panthers to cross over center field. It was when the Panthers defense conceded a two-point safety instead of punting from their end zone.  Kingston regained the lead.

Bashall rounded off the scoring with a single after a missed 33-yard field goal attempt.

Kingston’s pass game had its difficulties. In the first half, quarterback Dylan Fisher had two completions, throwing three interceptions. Fisher somewhat improved in the second half, having connected on three of five. At the end of the day, Fisher had 5 completions in 18 attempts for a total of thirty-yards, the longest being only nine with no single first down conversions.

Having carried the ball 17 times, running back Connor Burtenshaw was the rushing  ‘go-to guy’. Burtenshaw completed the game with 166-yards, with his longest being 44-yards – his first forward carry of the game.

Kingston’s defense limited Cumberland’s offense to 240 total yards. Three Grenadiers – David Hron, Aaron Brownlee and Tristan Grosman recorded quarterback sacks. Meanwhile, Grossman and Matt Pendergast each had an interception.

Two other teams aside from Kingston are undefeated after week five – Ottawa Myers Riders and London Mustangs (4-0).

Kingston’s next matchup is July 6 at home when they host the Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
